Nevada Wind Turbine Maker To Build Windspires In Manistee

MANISTEE - A Nevada manufacturer will partner with a Manistee tooling maker to build more urban-friendly vertical wind-turbines in this Northern Michigan community that will generate hundreds of new jobs after the Manistee County Board approved a $400,000 grant Tuesday.

Mariah Power of Reno, Nevada, approved the partnership with MasTech Manufacturing Inc. in Manistee on Monday night, contingent upon commission approval of the grant, Commission Chairman Allan O'Shea said in an email message to MITechNews.Com. O'Shea also said Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm phoned Mariah Power Owner Mike Hess to assure him his company was very welcome in Michigan. MITechNews.Com was unable to reach Hess for comment on Tuesday.

Earlier Hess had expressed concern that his company's bid to come to Michigan had become a political hot potato after Mariah's bid for a $2 million grant from Michigan's 21st Century Jobs Fund was rejected by a screening board. The screening board, selected by the Michigan legislature, didn't believe Mariah could meet its sales projections, even though the company has a backlog of more than 3,500 orders, or more than a year's production.

With a $400,000 Community Development Block Grant now approved by the Commission, Mariah will work with MasTech to build vertical wind axis called Windspires. The unit stands about 30 feet high and operates with three sets of airfoils that catch wind and rotate around a vertical axis.

The Windspire turns a 20-foot tall rotor that generates electricity, and an inverter converts electricity from direct current to alternating current for residential or commercial use. The unit can generate approximately 2,000 kilowatt hours per year with average winds speeds of 12-mph, and sells for around $5,000, plus installation costs.

The joint venture will create 40 plus jobs initially with the promise of 120 new jobs in this rural region near Lake Michigan within three years. Michigan would be the only place in the world where this cutting-edge, clean technology will be built, said MasTech Operations Manager John Holcomb. Together, Mariah and MasTech will now partner with Mariah to churn out 300 Windspires each month, with plans to expand production to more than 1000 a month by 2011.

We have received a little help from Congress and we need to keep the pressure on them to keep the Alternative Energy Industry alive. Why they cannot see this is beyond me. Keep in front of them to allow long term tax credits. One year for Wind is a joke. If we ever needed the Pickens Plan to apply its force on Congress, it is now! We need millions of people not thousands to create a loud and convincing voice. It is vital to the industry and millions of potential jobs.

Maglev is a smarter way to say good-bye to oil

22 October 2008

Our economy, standard of living, and national security in the U.S. depend on efficient, effective, and affordable autos, trucks, airplanes, and trains. But rapidly escalating oil prices and America's increasing dependence on expensive oil imports from hostile and politically unstable countries threatens all three. The situation, bad as it is now, will get much worse in the coming years as world oil production declines.

The major mode of transport in the 21st century will be electric autos and trucks, and maglev (Magnetic Levitation). Oil-fueled autos and trucks will become as obsolete as coal-fired trains are today.

Why will this happen?

World oil reserves are running out while demand keeps rising.
There are no practical alternative fuels to oil. Biofuels can meet only a tiny fraction of U.S. transport needs and they drive up food prices. Hydrogen fuel requires impossible amounts of energy to produce it, and has insurmountable safety and security problems. Synfuels from coal and oil shale will greatly increase carbon dioxide emissions, speeding up global warming.
Oil-fueled transport is a major cause of global warming, due to the carbon dioxide emissions from its tailpipes. As the developing world adopts the American lifestyle, global warming will rapidly accelerate, with incredible damage to the environment and human society.
Even though modern maglev was invented by two American scientists - Drs. James Powell and Gordon Danby in the 1960's - the U.S. is behind the curve in the development of electric transport. The federal government started a maglev research program, but dropped it in 1973. However, other countries took up the slack and now lead the world in operating first generation maglev systems.

Japan's first-generation Superconducting Maglev system, which is based on the 1960's inventions of Powell and Danby, has carried over 50,000 passengers and holds the world ground speed record of 361 mph. Japan plans to build a 300 mph maglev line between Tokyo and Osaka that will carry over 100,000 passengers daily. Germany has also developed a first-generation maglev that uses conventional electromagnets rather than superconducting magnets. The maglev train in Shanghai, China, was built by Germany.

don't meen to change the subject.....just stoping by to tack this poster up.

The bridge to the future seem to be collapsing under the weight of minds chained to boat anchors resembling automobiles (of any kind) A gallon of gas is the equivalent of 500 human hours of labor, so the future may see some changes. Even the lowest-paid worker might baulk at wages of a penny an hour -- when gas is $5 a gallon. http://www.lifeafte rtheoilcrash. net/Research. html#anchor_ 71

we have "discharged" the plethora of condensed solar energy called oil ,that took millions of years to create under very energy intensive pressures and heat...in the span of a few hundred years( give it up ).....reconfiguring our systems to operate on available ambient is going to require copious amounts of energy from every available resource, and a commitment to frugality(after being given a warning, non human powered"recreational" vehicle operators may be shot on sight )...if your legs work, use them...there are simple machines widely distributed that will allow you to increase your mechanical advantage for transportation purposes (they are called bicycles).....

Reqauntifying energy to a common unit:our current agricultural machine puts food on the plate at an efficiency of ten calories in/ one calorie out..

Matt here, the teacher with the Mariah wind turbine at The College School. So far, our wind turbine has created a wonderful buzz of excitement and the local press has taken notice. Many conversations have been stimulated on the potential for clean energy on a small scale residential level. Our state of Missouri just passed a proposition similar to 26 other states in which the major power companies now must get 15% of their electricity from sources such as wind and solar. We get a lot of questions about how much electricity we are making but we are not sure. A compelling reason for us choosing Mariah was that we could gather data on its production, therefore providing an authentic audience to people like those reading now, to our students who would help analyze and publish their findings. However, we have not yet received the necessary software and hardware to make this happen. Mariah tells us we should have what we need to share data by December. We're counting the days. If they don't come through with their promises, we may rely on an alum from our school who is writing software that would compare our solar array data to our wind turbine data. His company is called Heliotronics. They currently help schools across the nation look mostly at solar panel data.

The other most commonly asked question is about the Windspire's wobble. It appears to wobble up to about 9 inches back and forth sort of like an out of balance ceiling fan and you can hear the generator scraping against the housing on the turbine. This is scaring our parents as they keep asking if the whole thing is going to snap and fall into our greenhouse. So for now, we've turned off the windspire and are no longer generating electricity until we can get this resolved. Either the installer will have to tweak the balance or Mariah will have to help us resolve the issue. Since we are in one of the milder wind zones of the 50 or so Windspires that are in operation, I'm wondering if any other windspire operators are having similar problems. We hope that our experience will help Mariah fine tune their product and we hope if we go first through the process of trouble shooting, we will have something to contribute to the larger community whop is considering small scale wind power. If we solve our problems, I will be sure to update on this site. Our school is so enjoying the conversation (even if it is a little scary and we've had some delays and setbacks). The degree of mystery is part of makes this authentic science for our children.

We just completed install of our Mariah Windspire vertical axis wind turbine at our school - The College School of Webster Groves, Missouri. Love it. It's beautiful, iconic, and it is generating electricity! Here is a link to some pics of the install. The key to the building permits was having a "wet seal" from a local and respected engineer. They basically took the engineering spec drawings that Mariah provided (with Nevada engineering seals), crunched the numbers to verify and confirm that they could meet Missouri standards. The building commissioner came out for an inspection of the concrete footing and needs to come again to check the rest of it but all seems good. We just need to received delivery of our pc interface modul and software so we can start publishing the data of our energy production for others to see. My email is matthewdiller@mac.com if you have questions.

I am hoping to be able to give good input to our county zoning and planning to amend their rules to allow for residential windspires. Who can help me with height and other requirements for these? Where do I get the info so I can give accurate input?

Well after reading the latest post's it seems people are still in the game and the fight is on for America. I have started my own energy savings plan. I have started thinking how, I can save energy by changing light blubs when they go out with the new kind they do last for along time! and will get a wind generator that I can pay cash for and start thinking energy savings.
You know folks I'm not a rich guy selling an Idea but unless we change the way we use electricity and fuel then things will not ever change but by sticking to your plan we can make a diffrence one day at a time one person at a time.
Think about voting we are all fired up about voting we need to hold these people accountable and keep there feet to the fire.
The last few elections have been poor in voter turn out so think about this our very own legislature voted to give themselves a pay increase there was only 38% voter turn out so go vote.
Many years and hope's have gone by so please go vote and we can all will bring on a new change in the way things work and we can get things done.
Also Fair Tax Now!
See Ya! Larry H
