Nevada Wind Turbine Maker To Build Windspires In Manistee

MANISTEE - A Nevada manufacturer will partner with a Manistee tooling maker to build more urban-friendly vertical wind-turbines in this Northern Michigan community that will generate hundreds of new jobs after the Manistee County Board approved a $400,000 grant Tuesday.

Mariah Power of Reno, Nevada, approved the partnership with MasTech Manufacturing Inc. in Manistee on Monday night, contingent upon commission approval of the grant, Commission Chairman Allan O'Shea said in an email message to MITechNews.Com. O'Shea also said Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm phoned Mariah Power Owner Mike Hess to assure him his company was very welcome in Michigan. MITechNews.Com was unable to reach Hess for comment on Tuesday.

Earlier Hess had expressed concern that his company's bid to come to Michigan had become a political hot potato after Mariah's bid for a $2 million grant from Michigan's 21st Century Jobs Fund was rejected by a screening board. The screening board, selected by the Michigan legislature, didn't believe Mariah could meet its sales projections, even though the company has a backlog of more than 3,500 orders, or more than a year's production.

With a $400,000 Community Development Block Grant now approved by the Commission, Mariah will work with MasTech to build vertical wind axis called Windspires. The unit stands about 30 feet high and operates with three sets of airfoils that catch wind and rotate around a vertical axis.

The Windspire turns a 20-foot tall rotor that generates electricity, and an inverter converts electricity from direct current to alternating current for residential or commercial use. The unit can generate approximately 2,000 kilowatt hours per year with average winds speeds of 12-mph, and sells for around $5,000, plus installation costs.

The joint venture will create 40 plus jobs initially with the promise of 120 new jobs in this rural region near Lake Michigan within three years. Michigan would be the only place in the world where this cutting-edge, clean technology will be built, said MasTech Operations Manager John Holcomb. Together, Mariah and MasTech will now partner with Mariah to churn out 300 Windspires each month, with plans to expand production to more than 1000 a month by 2011.

We have received a little help from Congress and we need to keep the pressure on them to keep the Alternative Energy Industry alive. Why they cannot see this is beyond me. Keep in front of them to allow long term tax credits. One year for Wind is a joke. If we ever needed the Pickens Plan to apply its force on Congress, it is now! We need millions of people not thousands to create a loud and convincing voice. It is vital to the industry and millions of potential jobs.

Hi Charles,

Hi Charles,
Mariah Power is a privately held company. For any information regarding investing it should be directed to Mike Hess CEO.
His number is: 775 831-9463
He will also be able to give you more detailed information on the completion of the Michigan plant and who the dealer is, or will be, in that area.
Everything is coming together and I expect to see things really take off around the first of the year.
Give Mike (or Bob Holland) a call. I am sure they will give you good information.
Thanks for your interest and best to you.
Aloha,
Bill

Is Mariah Power a publicly-traded company? Is the plant in Manistee, Michigan up and running? Has there been a ground-breaking ceremony? I am a Michigan resident. If I wanted a Mariah Windspire to be installed at my home, does the company have its own installers? What tax breaks are available to me?

I have 82 acres in West Teaxs smack dab in the wind corridor. If anyone one is interested in putting windmills there plase let me know. I am not looking to make a bunch of money. If I can cover my taxes ($250 per year) the improvements to the land alone, will increase it's value. I own the peaks of two mountains (4600 ft.) This would be perfect for windmills. I can be reached at tsalmon05@embargmail.com Thanks....Troy

Gov. Gregoire signs Energy Independence Pledge

Gregoire signs pledge by T. Boone Pickens, calling for energy independence plan

OLYMPIA—Gov. Chris Gregoire today joined T. Boone Pickens in his call for an energy independence plan, to be enacted within the new presidential administration’s first 100 days.

“I am pleased to join thousands of Washingtonians in support of the Pickens Plan,” Gregoire said. “We can and must reduce our dependence on imported fuel and increase our use of clean, domestic energy supplies.”

Pickens’ plan calls on the next president and congress to enact an energy strategy that reduces the nation’s foreign oil dependence by at least 30 percent over the next 10 years. The plan calls for the use of proven American technology and resources, the development of new energy sources, and the expansion of the national electrical grid.

“Pickens puts a lot of emphasis on wind power,” Gregoire said. “He understands the value of this natural resource. So does Washington . That’s why our state is currently the fifth top producer of wind power nationally. Communities in Eastern and Western Washington are benefitting from the growth of wind power in our state, and we need a strong federal partner to continue this progress.”

"Governor Gregoire is a national leader in energy. I am honored to have her joining me in the fight to make energy independence the top priority of the next administration," said T. Boone Pickens. "Washingtonians have visited www.pickensplan.com in droves, and now with the support of their governor we can work together to reduce foreign oil dependency by at least 30% over the next decade."

During Gregoire’s administration, Washington has made significant investments in clean energy, which are expected to reduce the state’s emissions levels by as much as 40 percent by 2020, and grow the economy. In March, 2008, Gregoire signed the ‘Climate Action and Green Jobs’ bill, which sets a goal of creating 25,000 green collar jobs by 2020. In 2005, Gregoire signed ‘Clean Car’ legislation, meant to reduce greenhouse emissions and dependence on foreign oil. Washington now has the largest state fleet of hybrid vehicles in the nation.

In addition, Gregoire supported Initiative 937, which passed and requires our largest utilities to pursue energy efficiency and renewable resources. To encourage the development of alternative and renewable fuels, Gregoire supported alternative-fuels research and development programs at Washington State University and the University of Washington . Washington now boasts businesses converting algae to biodiesel, building components for solar panels and turning garbage into ethanol.

“ Washington state hasn’t, and won’t wait for the federal government to take the lead to address our dependence on foreign oil and climate change,” Gregoire said. “We will need to look at more clean, domestic energy supplies than even the Pickens Plan contains, and we’ll need all the partners we can find. That’s why I signed the Pickens Pledge, and now hope Washington gains a federal ally when a new administration is elected in November.”

SOLAR TAX BILL PASSED TODAY!! THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP.

We're entering a new era of solar energy.

Congress just passed historic solar legislation that will increase the use of solar energy all across the America, and the President signed it into law. HR1424 extends the 30% solar tax credit for eight years and removes the $2000 monetary cap for residential solar electric installations.

This is a tremendous accomplishment, and we thank the entire solar community for many months of grassroots advocacy and support. We'd like to especially recognize our colleagues at SEIA for their extraordinary work.

Not only will this help families combat skyrocketing energy costs and generate thousands of green-collar jobs -- but it will help homeowners save thousands of dollars to make solar energy even more affordable.

If you called the telephone number at the U.S. Capitol yesterday to leave a message for your representative in Congress and the line continued to be busy, try again today. The VOTE has been moved to FRIDAY.

This VOTE will determine the fate of the SOLAR Industry and most likely the WIND industry. This vote is vital throughout America for thousands of very good jobs, contracts, and huge building projects.

One phone call by you will make a difference.

HI everyone I was hearing today that the house of representative's did'nt pass the bail out. Well I think that is just fine because I don't know anyone thats rich I am sure however there is a few people living on penisons, but we are all to blame for not being involved in voting in past election and or not finding out the fact's for one's self.
I have voted since I turned 18, I've always considered it a great privilege to vote! as much as we all have decided that conserving energy is a need that has to happen! We also need to get out and vote even when we can't have who we want this time, We can vote in a president that will listen to the people then when we can vote in a new congress that can change things. We have all seen that one man cannot make a diffrence or this bill would have passed with no problems because congress is already a majority of dems. If they wanted it they would have passed it! Well they can take it on the chin, I am already broke they can't take anymore away, So just write them let the speaker of the house know your situation be it good or bad let all of the congress and the rep's know.
I know ! Why don't they give all the donation's they took for the last few years back (they would love to but it's been ear marked for more social programs that don't have any value except for life long recipient's of them.
We need to believe in America and make it greater.
Thanks for reading I hope it make's you write all the people in Washington and this great State.
