To begin making tangible progress towards energy independence we need to build a distributed network of community-scale renewable energy facilities. To do that, we need people in every community to be active, visible supporters. We have started a new blog that compliments the PickensPlan by focusing specifically on supporting local leaders.

Learn more and show your support - we are building an army of t-shirt-wearing proponents who show up to local meetings and demonstrate thier committment to renewable energy - go www.buildbabybuild.net

My idea is to utilize the $25 Billion President-elect Barack Obama proposed to invest in rebuilding America's roads by painting them with reflective paint to reflect solar energy in an effort to offset the loss of glaciers. In the near future this project could mature to begin working with solar paint to absorb solar energy to utilize for street lights, electric cars, etc.
Reasons I believe this is an idea worth pursuing:
a.) Blacktop absorbs and holds heat and heats up cities.
b.) Painting roads would be a good way to equally distribute global cooling and reverse global warming.
With kind regards,

WALTER REED Comment by WALTER REED on November 29, 2008 at 11:59am

Hi Fred:

Yes, construction of solar trees as you called them, or three axis trackers, is a long over-looked application for photovoltaic in parking lots. I proposed this in 1983 during the last energy crises. Each shopping center with such shade features would be an attraction for shoppers to avoid 'sun-baked cars' when parked for shopping. Back then, the cost of photovoltaic cells and modules were twice what they are today and new breakthroughs of both efficiency and costs hold real promise to make these shading power stations economic. View above is a parking lot proposed with over one megawatt peak output, or some 240 megawatt hours of electrical power output per month.

Further, in 1986 we put together a new structural system forming a smart energy structure proposed as a casino / hotel involving many dual purpose features of inhabitable space, conservation and green energy production which then produced a parity of energy requirements during the period of any one year. This type of structural capability is currently being revised, both architecturally and larger, having any shape or size design capabilities with efficient inhabitable space inclusive; perhaps spanning entire hill-sides, township or even a swamp.

Good call Fred,

Walter
