IRSC INTRODUCES RENEWABLE ENERGY TRAINING
FOR GREEN BUILDING INDUSTRY
Helping Treasure Coast residents launch new green collar careers, Indian River State College is providing new training opportunities in the rapidly growing renewableenergy industry. Starting March 13, IRSC is introducing a series of courses that will enable area residents to prepare for a new career or open a business in installation of solar energy systems. The three courses will prepare students for the Florida Solar Contractors License Exam for installation of solar thermal and solar photovoltaic electrical systems.
Systems installed by a licensed solar contractor qualify the homeowner for a state rebate and Federal Tax credit, which can amount to several thousand dollars, through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Because of the rebate and tax credits, individuals who are licensed to install the solar systems will have a competitive advantage in
the emerging green industry. The courses are among the first offerings of the IRSC Energy institute which will also introduce a weatherization course in green strategies for the home.
“With the United States projected to become the largest market for solar power in the world by 2011 and state and national incentives to convert to renewable energy sources, jobs and business opportunities in this field are excellent,” said Dr. Chrys Panayiotou, IRSC Electronics Engineering Professor, who will be teaching the electronics aspects of the courses. “IRSC is moving forward quickly to provide workforce training in emerging fields and help people launch new careers in the green economy.”
The course in Solar Thermal Systems will focus on the installation and repair of solar power for water heating systems, including pool heating. It will meet on Fridays and
Saturdays, during the weekends of March 13, 20 and 27 at the Kight Center for Emerging Technologies at the Main Campus in Fort Pierce. A second section of the Solar Thermal course will be offered on Monday through Saturday, March 30 through April 4.
Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Systems will examine how these systems generate electricity from solar cells. Students will learn how to determine the size of a PV system needed for Page 2 - IRSC INTRODUCES RENEWABLE ENERGY TRAINING FOR GREEN BUILDING
INDUSTRY various applications and how to install and connect the PV system to the electrical grid. This
intensive hands-on course will meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturdays from May 5 to 16 at the Main Campus. A second course in Solar PV Systems will be offered during the week of June 15, Monday through Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The third course in the series will cover Florida Construction Law to prepare students for the Florida Solar Contractor’s Licensing Examination.
Weatherization: Green Strategies for the Home will help homeowners protect their property from the elements and save money by reducing energy consumption. The $36 course will meet on Monday and Wednesday mornings on March 16 and 18 at the Blackburn Educational Building at the R. Duke Nelson Human Resources and Development Centre in Fort Pierce. The course will also be offered on Monday and Wednesday evenings,
March 23 and 25, at the IRSC carpentry lab at the Main Campus.

Ok Ted,

Thanks for asking. It goes like this:

Hi howarya, My name is Chris and I am a volunteer for the Pickens Plan and T. Boone Pickens. Have you heard of him? (y/n) He has been on most of the Sunday morning news shows, 60 minutes and more talking about his "Pickens Plan" If you havent heard what it is or is about is we are petitioning congress to pass a law stating the USA will be 100% energy independent in 10 years. In other words we will stop importing oil from Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Venezuela, countries that dont like us very much. We have been sending them up to 700 Billion dollars a year for their oil. We would prefer to use our own energy resources, technology and Labor and keep it all right here in the USA. (If they ask me what kind of energy then I just mention solar (point at the Florida Sun), Wind and Natural Gas or CNG.) (Now some people want to go on about different kinds of energy, Alaska, off shore drilling... I just let them talk at this point. Some people if you are reading their expression will let you know that this is all they need and they are ready to sign. The talkers - Let them talk. The signers - sign em up. The discussionists that want to get my opinion on Hydrogen or Nuclear... I just say and sometimes point to the sign up sheet that all the petition says is Energy Independence, it does not say How we are going to go about it. Build it and they will come. Pass the law and technology and industry will rally to make it happen. I try to keep it short as possible usually because most people just understand it and sign. But some people have to express their opinion. They just want to be heard. Now, usually in groups of people standing in line I dont have to repeat the whole T. Boone Pickens and the Pickens Plan thing, I can usually just say Hi howarya, did you hear what we were just talking about? Quite often they will say yeah, I want to sign :))

Thats it! They key is finding people standing in line. They have nothing else to do except watch their children ( in which case I make sure I am not between them and their kids) or talk on the phone or two each other. But they dont usual have much to talk about so you give them something to discuss and express their opinion on. I have had one person in a group of three say to me quite forcefully, Oh I will never sign that. and then two others in the group sign up with out hesitation.

Carry On!!! carry on....

Chris,
Would you share your "pitch" on the PP with us. It works very well! They were lined up practically reaching for your pen.

We had a great signing day at Gumbo Limbo Park in Boca Raton. We just showed up with our clip boards and Ted Wallace and I got a bunch of new signees.

If you have a community function in your area, I suggest just showing up with a clip board and sign up sheets and tell people why you are a volunteer for the Pickens Plan. As soon as they hear you are a volunteer, they start listening closer, and as you explain all we are doing is attempting to get the US off of foreign oil dependency they usually jump right in. Quite often I dont even have to explain any more than that.

It was a very good day!

Carry On!!!, carry on...

Hey friends

I think what we might want to do is have someone A Good Writer. Write us up a Bill for the Energy Bonds and get it to our Sen, Reps, And Congress people News outlets so We the People Can Push it.

Any Ideas On a good writer that is willing to help us?

Mike
