October 13, 2008 LESLIE WIMMER for Fort Worth Business Press interviews candidates for TX 12 district race.
"On Nov. 4, voters in District 12 will have two choices for their U.S. House Representative: incumbent Kay Granger, R-Fort Worth, and Tracey Smith, a democrat running for Granger’s seat."
Energy: Alternative forms and domestic oil drilling
Granger: “T. Boone Pickens came and made a presentation [in Washington D.C.] that I was able to attend and he and others have some really exciting possibilities having to do with alternative energy. We should be doing what I call all of the above, I’m on every vote and every bill to encourage drilling so it’s American energy rather than oil we’ve purchased from people who aren’t friendly to the United States. And, funding for alternative energy, which is wind, nuclear energy, certainly clean coal, as well as conservation. That has to be the way forward in the future, not depending on one form of energy but really working toward alternatives.”
Smith: “I have signed the Boone Pickens pledge, which states that we encourage energy users in our country to use all forms of energy available, including drilling for more oil, including atomic energy, including building more power plants, coal. I’d rather reduce that to say anything that doesn’t harm the environment. [The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska is] an area we shouldn’t touch and I’d like to try to save part of our world. I’m in favor of off-shore drilling, growing up in Corpus Christi I’ve seen offshore wells all my life. It’s great for the economy and necessary for our way of life. We do have to have alternative energy, we have to wean ourselves off of a dependence on foreign oil and develop alternative sources wherever that may be.”
