A fantasic alternative to single residence closed-loop geothermal systems for cold climates are cold climate heat pumps and reverse cycle chiller heat pumps. The savings are considerable and the efficiency is comparable!

Well on Tuesday I signed my purchase agreement to build. The next step towards getting my geo-thermal unit. My heating contractor ran an ROI and TCO calculation comparing a high efficiency natural gas furnace system vs an air to air electric heat pump vs geothermal using my local utility rates. The air to air heat pump is a no brainer. The ROI was 1.5 yrs. The geo-thermal was 7.5 years. When you directly compare the air to air heat pump vs geo-thermal, the ROI is 11.5 years. Meaning I breakeven with my geothermal over the air to air heat pump after running the geothermal 11.5 years. ... So, my wife is questioning my logic for wanting to go geothermal. :) :) Are there other financial benefits I'm missing? For example, industry studies state the maintanance costs of geothermal on paper are lower, but they appear to be insignificant.

Best of luck Eric. I replaced my propane system with residential geothermal this past February. It is working great for me. I originally estimated a seven year payback, but the price of propane has gone through the roof and as a result the payback period will be much shorter than anticipated. Plus our house is more comfortable year round due to a more even circlulation.

I joined since I'm in the process of designing my house right now. I plan to use a residential Geothermal system. I hope to share some of my research and experience from a home owner's perspective.

Many parts of the country don't have enough wind for personal wind power, (not that this is not a great idea). However, the geothermal works pretty much everywhere. Although it doesn't eliminate the use of energy, my experience is a 90% saving on heating and 50% on air conditioning.

Take a look at our group site Mariah Power. The Windspire is now on display in Washington D.C. at the U.S. Capitol Botanic Garden through October 2008. Units are going up in California, Nevada, and Utah now, and we will very visable and effective throughout Hawaii this year. Mariah will be available worldwide as production increases with the completion of a new plant in Youngstown, Ohio. For more information contact Bill Mollring at : 831 402-2037 mrbillmaui@yahoo.com -
