This Group favors the inclusion of conservation education in K-12 core curriculum; and a painless way for the Federal Government to provide State Education departments with subsidies earmarked for that purpose by ROUNDING-UP gas prices .1 of a cent.

T. BOONE ROUND-UP

Since Boone has access and implied support in the Washington beltway and the Stimulus package already includes aspects in support of America’s energy independence, conservation and the development of clean energy options…how about suggesting this…

The premise would be that as part of the new administrartions Energy Independence Plan that gas prices be ROUNDED-UP one tenth of a cent and that the proceeds are earmarked for energy conservation education in our nationwide schools from K-12.

After all, no one really thinks of $1.79.9 as anything other than a dollar eighty. It would simplify the math at the pump and the accumulation of dollars nationwide could be distributed to State Education budgets and provide a significant contribution to the objective of decreasing our energy dependence by introducing conservation techniques in our early education core curriculum. As Boone stated during his meeting with Owens-Corning, conservation is the cream in our efforts toward energy independence. It may be that school children will be reminding their parents to turn off the lights and then teach their children how to accomplish what we adults have thus far failed to learn.

Here are some interesting numbers:

*Just for example, daily gasoline consumption in the USA in 2007 was 390 Million Gallons x .001 = $390,000.00 x 365 Days = $142,350,000.00. In long hand that’s ONE HUNDRED FORTY TWO MILLION THREE HUNDRED FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLARS a year which would be allocated toward early education for conservation with kids between the age of 5 and 18. It sounds to me like enough money to educate a few adults along the way…

The Feds already collect approximately 18.4 cents on every gallon, so the reporting and collection infrastructure is already in place. They would just need to separate a tenth of a cent to an Energy Conservation Early Education Fund.

Consumers wouldn’t really feel it, and may be happy to dispose of this enigmatic penchant for a discount store mentality when it comes to gas pricing. The visibility and historic nature of even pricing will be a daily reminder to generations of consumers that they are contributing to our Energy Independence, National Security and a Healthier Planet with every gallon they buy. Getting rid of the .9 is a good thing all around.

I am grateful and proud to be a member of the Pickens Plan. We have assembled an army without uniforms, guns or bombs. Our weapon is our relentless determination to conserve the energy we produce, develop new clean alternatives and end our dependence on foreign imports.

In referencing our ability to solve the unprecedented problems at hand, President Obama has passionatley proclaimed YES WE CAN. With Boone’s leadership, influence, resources and the perspective of his long experience on the ground…he has clarified the reality…which is YES WE MUST!

BOONE, your army is with you. We can’t imagine a better legacy for any man.

With great appreciation,

Jack Costantino, Jim Muhaw and 1.4 Million riders in your ROUND-UP!

Hi Jack!
I think the concept is a great idea! This idea may not be part of the Stimulus Bill however it could be part of a new program funded by the Department of Energy. The "earmark" is very worthwhile and would help kids think of reducing imported oil in many areas of their lives.

I emailed Leslie stating my support of your group. I think that either the DOE or the Stimulus Bill would work. The idea might have more growth potential if the program was funded by the DOE and not the Stimulus Bill, in my opinion. The program is worthwhile enough to make the effort.

Teachers would be hired or outside assignments developed to make the program worthwhile. I think there could be educational programs developed within the green companies and the oil companies. There is an underground network of oil or gas lines in the Lehigh County, PA area. There are ways to inspire and make kids aware of the alternatives to imported oil.

Thank you for taking the time to create this group.

This is a great idea! Wish I had thought of it! LOL
But seriously, you are right no one would mind a 1 tenth of a cent more for gas if the money was used to help educate our children about energy conservation.
Thank you Leslie for inviting me to this group.
You have my support!

Hhhaaaa...the idea is hatched.....knew you were up to something today. Why not call it Round Up for Pikens Kids? A great idea indeed, Jack. Like the UPromise program that takes a % of your all puchases and accumulates it in a fund for college education expenses. We could do the same. Shoud we limit it solely to fuel purchase or could we expand it to something bigger... I think of the 1.4+M Pickens Plan members contributing a fraction of their fuel purchases to this good cause to change awareness. What a fund the Pickens Plan would have to dish out!!! Jim

As a science teacher you'll appreciate this site sent to me by Leslie which has an assortment of lesson's for various ages and grades. It's exactly the point of the plan. Leslie mentored and supported this effort before it was published as well as another which will be released tomorrow. She's an indespensable part of the success of the Pickens movement.

Thank you Leslie for the invitation to join the group. Conservation is really a science project for school kids. Besides, as a government policy at the local level it may be useful to let schools compete to teach conservation and reward the schools that do best at it.

It would be interesting to see if the President's plan to weatherize schools includes technical upgrades in school buildings to automatically conserve energy using energy efficient light bulbs and things like light sensors so that the school staff and students do not have to remember turning off the lights, for example.

Having lived down South for 7 years composting was a way of life. First off we didn't have municipal collection service and had to haul our stuff to the dump. Secondly fishing is a way of life there and although many of my friends used plugs or minnows I always had a fresh supply of very healthy worms.

Of course I was laughed at as a know-nuthin yankee boy...but I also ate a lot of fish:).

Thanks very much for your support. Please invite your network to join this discusiion group and leave their comments.

Hey Jack,

Great idea! One of the first things we must learn is composting. We need to place ours in a shady spot, not under a pine or cedar tree, a deciduous tree like a maple or oak would do fine. To aid in the composting process, I advise in either purchasing a plastic, re-useable 3” high ring in witch to encapsulate the compost. I have two and they have lasted me 9 years. Or building one out of wood; the less area exposed to air, the more area where bacteria will work in conjunction with nitrogen, potassium and potash and all the worms and bugs that heat the compost mass up to turn it into the sweet soil it becomes. We will re-enrich our land naturally using the scraps from our kitchen we'd normally throw away (and leave a carbon footprint) like vegetable scraps, coffee and tea grounds, newspaper shredding, plant leaves and flowers, leftover non buttered cooked veggies, weeds sans flowers and no grasses (!) layer garden soil between your kitchen and garden castings and water like a garden. If by chance you have access to rabbit or sheep/goat/llama droppings, by all means include them in your compost pile too. You will only need to turn it and water more often and perhaps add some dried animal blood to increase the composting process.

A good working compost pile will smell like freshly turned earth. Turn your living soil every other week and look for worms and night crawlers! If you get these guys, you know you've done well. They are your workers, feed them and give them a good watering. Add shredded newspaper or outdated oatmeal or ground grains with your dirt and water. Worms may be purchased at numerous places but cover your pile with a mesh screen to protect your worms from birds eating your workers. You may want to go fishing!

Sounds like a great idea! Congress is already trying to cut money for schools out of the Recovery and Reinvestment Act. I guess they don't consider education as being a reinvestment in our future.

Time for the people to stand up and chip in their extra pennies from the gas pumps to help pay for improving our schools. Teach the kids about Conservation and Renewable Energy with those millions of pennies!!
