I have been working in telecommunication since 1964, counting my time in the Air Force where I maintained transport facilities between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, and between Cam Ranh Bay and Vung Tau in Viet Nam. I have worked for the old Bell System and affiliated companies since that time, having retired three times along the way. I currently work full time from an office in my home. I have been a full time telecommuter since 1996.

I am glad Mr. Moreland has formed this group. Common sense tells you if just 25% of the people who drive to an office to sit at a terminal in a cubicle began full time telecommuting, not only would we have a very significant savings in transportation fuel consumption, we would have a significant reduction in the impact on the national infrastructure. Imagine the reduction in cost to corporations if they did not have to house ¼ of their workers in offices in cities.

Telecommunications technologies currently exist that will enable this. I cannot understand why more corporations are not pushing this idea unless it is the idea that workers cannot be trusted unless they can be seen. A “management by results accomplished” philosophy is still a hard sell for middle and upper management.

All your ideas on telecommunications associated with wind and solar power farms are good and on the right track but telecommunications can have the greatest impact by reducing travel.

I see the price of gasoline is dropping again. After the Carter administration, that is the very thing that sounded the death knell to R&D for alternative energy sources. We must not let that happen again.

I’m just an old country boy, and I’ll stay that way, but that doesn’t mean I’m not progressive.

Don -
You have a very feasible idea! I believe you could make this a reality. Please let me know how your idea progresses.

One of my interests in proliferation of Wind Power is in applying wireless telecommunications to the wind farms. These farms need IP connectivity to monitor and collect data but they are located far from traditional telecommunications infrastructure. Typically they are laying miles and miles of fiber optic cable between the turbines and the power station. And depending where the power station is, it may also not have telecommunications access. There's a better solution ! Fixed wireless or WiMax. Much cheaper and faster to deploy than laying fiber and there is a potential added benefit.....Rural broadband internet services. Now if I could just find a Service Provider or Equipment vendor that would hire me to sell this to the wind farms!!!
