Information

Texans for Energy Independence

A group for Texas residents supporting clean, affordable power and energy independence.

Location: Texas
Members: 997
Latest Activity: Oct 10

Welcome to the Texans for Energy Independence group page. I started this group to connect Texans who share my concern for our energy security. Hopefully by combining our voices we can influence the presidential candidates in this election as well as local politicians here in Texas.

If you have ideas to share for organizing to support the Pickens plan or ways to improve the Texas group please post a comment to the group comment wall or start a forum thread. Please feel free to invite other Texans to join the group.

I have started a list of Useful links for the group. If you have one to add let me know.

It was about six months ago that Boone Pickens publicly unveiled "The Pickens Plan," a bold initiative to address the national security and economic threats posed by America's escalating addiction to foreign oil.

Given the upcoming debate on the federal stimulus package proposed by President Obama, I thought it makes sense to highlight some of the accomplishments of the Pickens Plan, and to outline how some of the core messages Boone advanced from the start have resonated with Americans, and in our nation's capital.

Consider this: When Boone testified last July before the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security, he said: "I am convinced we are paying for both sides of the Iraqi War."

Here's what President Obama said in his first news conference yesterday: "America's dependence on oil is one of the most serious threats that our nation has faced. It bankrolls dictators, pays for nuclear proliferation and funds both sides of our struggle against terrorism."

Here's another one.

Boone Pickens, last September: "Every president since Richard Nixon has said, 'Vote for me and we'll be energy independent.' But not one of them has done a damn thing about it."

President Obama, yesterday: "President Nixon promised to make our energy -- our nation energy independent by the end of the 1970s. When he spoke, we imported about a third of our oil, and we now import more than half."

None of this should come as any surprise. Way back in August, then candidate Obama endorsed Boone's objectives, saying: T. Boone Pickens is right. We need a much bolder and much bigger set of solutions."

The attached document highlights sections of the energy provisions of the stimulus plan that have long been a part of The Pickens Plan. From a renewables perspective, the progress has been nothing short of amazing.

The Plan and the Stimulus.pdf

Boone has long advocated an expanded use of natural gas as a transportation fuel to reduce foreign oil/diesel/gasoline use, particularly in heavy duty fleet applications. The stimulus provides some groundwork for that, but clearly more needs to be done, and we will continue to work to achieve that goal as Washington develops a long-term energy bill in the coming weeks and months.

Boone has devoted a lot of time and resources to this issue, and he's had great support across America. We're grateful for your interest, support and involvement.

Now is the time to redouble our efforts. I encourage you to remind your friends and colleagues about the importance of this initiative, and to get involved by contacting your member of Congress and asking your friends to join Boone's New Energy Army. pickensplan.com.

RESOLUTION 2009-02 ENDORSING “THE PICKENS PLAN”

WHEREAS, the United States of America imports approximately 70% of its oil from foreign sources, and this dependence on foreign oil imposes substantial economic costs and creates national security issues,

WHEREAS, the Department of Energy reports that 20% of America's electricity can come from wind, and wind in many western states, both onshore and offshore, is a great resource that should be harnessed for the creation of energy,

WHEREAS, T. Boone Pickens has brought forth “The Pickens Plan” to move the United States away from its dependence on foreign oil and towards the development and use of renewable sources of energy,

WHEREAS, natural gas is a clean, safe and domestically available form of energy and is the best fuel immediately available for heavy duty, commercial and municipal transportation uses,

WHEREAS, the development and use of these energy resources can benefit school trust lands and state trust lands while investing in rural America, creating economic development and new jobs,

WHEREAS, building wind facilities where feasible could produce 20% of the electricity for the United States,

WHEREAS, utilizing natural gas for heavy duty transportation uses while using wind power to generate electricity can serve as a bridge to future clean power technologies,

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Western States Land Commissioners Association endorses the “Pickens Plan”.

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Western States Land Commissioners Association encourages policies that enact those portions of the Pickens Plan that benefit the unique resources of each state.

Approved this day January 14, 2009.

Hello and Happy Holidays to you and yours. I just want to let you know that we are organizing the New Energy Army by Congressional District so we can take action locally to make energy independence for America a reality. If you live in District TX 01 Please follow this link to join our group for the Congressional District TX 01

Our Goals as a group:

• Work with other members of the New Energy Army in your Congressional District
to set a goal of signing up 500 new members by Inauguration Day 2009.
• Host meet‐ups with other members of the Army in your Congressional District to
discuss ways you can take action and Push the Pickens Plan.
• Get an op‐ed or letter to the editor placed in your local newspaper telling everyone
why you support the Pickens Plan.
• If your Governor, U.S. Senators and U.S. Representative have not yet signed the
Pickens Plan Pledge, then ask them to sign today! Visit
http://www.pickensplan.com/district-leaderboard to find out if your elected
officials have signed the pledge.

When I volunteered for the TX 01 Congressional District to help organize the members, I wanted to know exactly where the members of that particular district were located. I found these maps online and they gave me a starting point. I wanted to share with ya'll so here is a link to the maps of each District of the 110th Congress of our fair country (January 2007-January 2009). As stated on the website: "These maps of the individual districts cover half of an 8.5- by 11-inch paper when printed. Designed for easy reference, they show the Congressional District overlaid on top of State and county boundaries along with interstate and US highways, selected streams and waterbodies, and major cities. The maps were created for use on the World Wide Web but print well using your home or office printer."

The maps are great and can easily be saved and added to each of your district groups page and provide a valuable tool for identifying the geographical areas where our current and prospective members reside; and making it easier for U.S. to search the site here and gather our teams together on a local scale.

If you live in District TX 01 stop by and join the group! If not, find which District you are in and check out those groups! Thanks!

110th Congressional District Maps of the USA

Below is the map for our District TX 01 and the following counties are included in District TX 01: Marion, Upshur, Harrison, Gregg, Smith, Rusk, Panola, Nacogdoches, Shelby, San Augustine, Angelina and Sabine. Major towns/cities include: Marshall, Longview, Tyler, Nacogdoches and Lufkin.

For a larger pic of our or any other district map on your computer just go to the link above find your District map and you can preview it online in larger format.

I look forward to working with ya'll! Write me with any comments or suggestions Please!

PS: If any of you have written articles to any of the newspapers let U.S. know! :o)
