Texans for Energy Independence

A group for Texas residents supporting clean, affordable power and energy independence.

Location: Texas
Members: 997
Latest Activity: Oct 10

Welcome to the Texans for Energy Independence group page. I started this group to connect Texans who share my concern for our energy security. Hopefully by combining our voices we can influence the presidential candidates in this election as well as local politicians here in Texas.

If you have ideas to share for organizing to support the Pickens plan or ways to improve the Texas group please post a comment to the group comment wall or start a forum thread. Please feel free to invite other Texans to join the group.

I have started a list of Useful links for the group. If you have one to add let me know.

Fellow Texans,

Comment on the story below and tell the Dallas Morning News why YOU think Boone Pickens should be "Texan of the Year."

Three times over a period of eight days this fall, I interviewed T. Boone Pickens before a live audience. I agreed to do so not because, as you might imagine, I was hoping a spare million might fall out of his pocket and into mine while he wasn't looking. I was interested in learning what his angle was, or is, or if he had one.

At age 80, happily (re)married to a stunning dervish of a fourth wife who is every bit his equal, the energy magnate could have chosen to sit on his behind, watch his beloved Oklahoma State Cowboys thrash around on the football field, and generally enjoy life. Instead, he had decided to write yet another memoir – his third – and to promote, with great fanfare, his eponymous plan to reduce and hopefully eliminate America's dependence on foreign oil through wind turbines, natural gas-powered cars and the like.

What on earth was he in it for? Surely not the money. Before and after the current financial crisis, he was a billionaire several times over, one of the richest men in the state, the nation and the universe.

Whatever the reason, not just his fellow Texans but the whole world had taken note. There was, first of all, the Nixon-in-China dynamic. It's one thing for Al Gore to preach the gospel of alternative energy, but it's quite another for one of the most iconic oil-and-gas men of all time to speak that inconvenient truth.

Second, there we were in the middle of a presidential campaign in which energy wasn't even one of the most pressing issues. Honestly, how often did you hear Barack Obama or John McCain thunder from the podium about the high price of a gallon of gas, or the way those rapscallions in the Middle East had us, quite literally, over a barrel? And yet both candidates made time to meet with Boone to seek his counsel – and, although he withheld it, his endorsement. Single-handedly and seemingly overnight, he got everyone talking about the issue he wanted them to talk about. (It's amazing what a self-financed advertising budget of around $50 million will do to advance your agenda.)

Wow. This is the third group I've joined today. As a business owner in South Texas interested in the renewable energy movement, i think this group suits me just fine.

We're currently planning Solar PV on our shopping centers as well as some of the warehouse & manufacturing districts. While wind is an option down here, sprawl seems to be climbing & we feel Solar is the way for the average consumer & business to directly feel & appreciate their investment towards energy efficiency & production.

Plus, after the first of january there's no cap on the 30% tax incentive. So that's always a plus.

Help make Boone TIME Magazine's MAN OF THE YEAR

The suddenly ubiquitous billionaire is hawking a wind power alternative energy plan. It requires massive turbine construction stretching the Great Plains, from Texas to the Canadian border. At a minimum, he's brought wind energy into the national conversation. And he just might be rich enough to pull it off.

Army,

With Boone as TIME Magazine's Man of the Year, the Pickens Plan would be front and center for the world to see. Click on the link below and send it to your friends to do the same!
