Government taking a firm stand to reduce need for oil

I have thought about this many times and now feel like I would like the opinions of others. Through this link below, you can see an article entitled: Germany signs end to nuclear power. It is a very progressive stand that a government is taken... with all the options that the United States has with it's vast lands and resources, what if our government takes a similar stand to eliminate oil consumption? What are your thoughts?
