I own a few shares of Southwest Energy (SWN) , a natural gas company. Have been looking at Ormat Technologies (ORA), a geothermal company and the ETF's TAN (solar power) and FAN (wind power). Athough recently they haven't been doing all that well, I'm convinced that they will over the long term. The Spanish and Dutch seem to dominate wind power at the present time and are buying land in the American midwest to build windfarms. I would like to see Pickens go public with his company.
I've got the same line of thinking as you. While the companies might not be doing so well right now, they will definitely have been a smart investment down the road when we recover from our addiction to oil and use much more alternative energy.
I play in this area too. I have been accumulating the ETF -TAN as I think it holds promise. Also Capstone, company wind play and trade the solars on news, specifically ESLR and AKNS.
Also really loved the double short oil ETF the last 2 days :)
Thanks for the stocks Rick. I'll be studying them on Scottrade tonight!!!! So far i've been buying Canadian Royalty Trusts that pay high dividends. HTE, PVX, and PGH. Tell me what you think of these.
I own Southwest (SWN), Petrohawk (HK), and Chesapeake (CHK) and they all did fantastic year to date until recently - I think they should rebound and continue to do well, but nothing is guaranteed in this market. A great and "safer" natural gas play is the ETF UNG, which is more diversified over 20+ natural gas related stocks, so if you do not want to track individual stocks day to day you can still be invested in natural gas. I personally believe the solar stocks are all way over-valued, and would not invest in any of them - in fact, I would go so far to say that solar power stocks have created a mini-bubble that will burst before the end of the year - I could be wrong . . . and miss out on a lot of money . . . . or I could be right. I do own, and would suggest people take a look at Kaydon (KDN) which is not a "wind power" stock, but it does make the specialized parts and ball bearings that the wind turbines Mr. Pickens is using needs, and Kaydon is the only company currently capable of producing those products. I still think Natural Gas is a good long term investment.
Broadwind Energy (BWEN) - small company that trades OTC. They are quickly becoming an integrated wind energy equipment and services provider... They have subsidiaries that manufacture wind towers, heavy duty gears, heavy duty fabrication, wind turbine installation and maintenance, and most recently heavy duty transportation. This is probably m y favorite company in the space, and while it is a speculative company at the moment, I think its set up to become huge.
Western Wind (WND) - a small wind energy producer, and although it trades in Canada, I believe they operate the largest (currently) producing wind farm in the US. I also think they have an issue that trades OTC under the symbol WNDEF. If subsidies are passed for wind energy, this could be extremely lucrative for this company.
Trinity Industries (TRN) - a manufacturer of rail cars with a rapidly growing wind tower division. Keep in mind that their history as a rail car manufacturer leaves them with an existing infrastructure for heavy duty fabrication and transportation
I'll leave it at that for now, but I'm interested to hear what everyone else has to say!
I added most of the stocks you guys mentioned to an experimental portfolio. After I watch them for awhile and see some potential I might invest in some.
Just read about a new wind energy company. I ran the stocks in the comments through my stock grading software. Not all of them in the data base. It grades them from the average of 15 different analysts reports. A's and B's are rated buy, C's are hold, D and below are sell.ESLR (C), HTE (D), PVX (C), PGH (C), HK (B-), CHK (B), KDE (D), SWN (A-), ORA (B+), LNG (D). Of course stock analysts and computer software aren't necessarily smarter than anyone else.
Another Texan, Gary Evans, has already created the ultimate alternative energy company. Here is an excerpt from GreenHunter Energy's (GRH) website.
GreenHunter Energy, Inc.'s mission is to develop, acquire and manage profitable renewable power and fuels assets.
GreenHunter was formed to be the first publicly traded renewable energy company based in the U.S. that provides to investors a portfolio of diversified assets in the alternative energy sector. Here is a webcast for more information.
I just looked at the Ormat web site, and they have a nice list of geothermal web site links which might be useful in terms of tracking down investments in that form of energy. The page is:http://www.ormat.com/businesses.php?did=29
