Hi Aaron,
Pickens Plan is looking for district-level leaders for each of the nine congressional districts in Tennessee to build out the "offensive" for the next phase of Pickens Plan between now and Inauguration Day. I received an email from Renee Klink asking ideas for Tennessee Push users who she should reach out to, and you came to mind. I hope you are interested in renewed activity with Pickens Plan and possibly helping to organize the 7th district (did I get that right? or 9th?) Please contact Renee or me.
Aaron,
TRANSPORTATION is the master key to basic survival, and the cornerstone of the economy. We all know that transportation presently depends on oil production, and oil production is peaking. We must focus first on transportation – it is the highest priority. The PickensPlan to transition vehicles to natural gas is a great start toward 100% energy independence, but is a stop-gap measure till we can transition to all electric transportation. Electric energy is strained without adding transportation demands; so we must implement drastic efficiency improvement.
Evacuated Tube Transport (ETT) is a patented technology where travel occurs without air friction or rolling resistance (like “Space Travel on Earth”); ETT can accomplish 50 times more transportation per kWh (or carbon credit) than electric cars or trains. ETT is silent, low cost, safe, faster than jets, and is electric so it can make maximum use of wind or PV power. I invite you to visit my page to learn more about ETT
Aaron,
Just so you know Senator Lamar Alexander is the Number 1 Opponent of Wind Power in the US Senate. He has tried to kill off the industry multiple times. If the Pickens plan fails it will be due to him. I have watched his anti-wind speeches - and his passion for killing the industry is simply shocking - He is some info on opposition:
Senator Alexander on Clean Energy: The Myths and the Realities
Myth I: Through a new “Manhattan Project” launched in May 2008, Senator Alexander is “working to put America firmly on the path to clean energy independence within a generation.”
Reality I: While Senator Alexander talks about a “path to clean energy independence,” he certainly doesn’t walk along that path. Although supporting a renewable energy economy is critical to shift America from its fossil fuel addiction, the Senator’s record shows that he consistently votes to maintain our dirty energy economy.
• During the Energy Bill debate in December 2007, Senator Alexander voted not once, but twice against the inclusion of a $13 billion energy tax package that would have redirected tax credits to businesses developing wind, solar, tidal and bio-energy power sources. Instead, Senator Alexander voted to allow the oil and gas companies to keep those tax credits, despite the record profits.
• In April 2008, the Housing Bill provided the Senator with another opportunity to support our nation’s clean, renewable energy businesses instead of Big Oil companies. Although the vast majority of his colleagues voted to extend these clean energy tax credits, Senator Alexander was one of only eight senators, and the only one from the Southeast, to vote against the measure.
• Most recently, Senator Alexander voiced support for the Gas Price Reduction Act of 2008, which attempts to increase domestic oil drilling. Rather than putting America on “the path to clean energy independence within a generation,” Senator Alexander promotes policies that deepen our dependence on dirty fossil fuels.
Myth II: Senator Alexander is a champion for all clean energy businesses across our state and helps to secure federal tax credits to support cleaner energy technologies.
Reality II: In December 2007, Senator Alexander voted against establishing a national Renewable Energy Standard (RES) to require utilities to generate 15 percent of their electricity from renewable energy sources by 2020. Had the Senator joined with 53 of his colleagues in supporting a national RES, clean energy businesses from Tennessee’s mountains (like Signal Wind Energy in Chattanooga) to the Mississippi Delta (like Sharp Solar in Memphis) would already be reaping the benefits of increased demand for clean, renewable energy production, leading to new jobs and economic development.
Not only does Senator Alexander fail to support clean energy expansion, he actively works to cripple the wind energy industry with his votes. In December 2007, the Senator sought support for two anti-wind amendments in the Farm Bill. Fortunately, a vast majority of the Senate rejected these attempts, and the margin of defeat demonstrates that Senator Alexander is not among the majority of his colleagues who realize that wind energy is a critical piece of our clean energy future.
Myth III: Senator Alexander protects the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and our Southern Appalachian landscapes.
Reality III: Senator Alexander is considered by many to be a champion of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. However, his staunch opposition to wind energy undermines his fervent efforts to reduce air pollution in these iconic mountains. By failing to support clean energy technologies, Senator Alexander ignores some of the most viable solutions to one of the park’s biggest threats.
Senator Alexander claims that “wind produces puny amounts of high-cost unreliable power” and that these turbines are “ruining the outdoors for no good reason.” Yet Tennessee-based wind energy companies such as Big Frog Mountain and Aerisyn LLC make wind turbines that could generate significant amounts of clean energy for our homes and businesses, replacing dirty coal-based energy derived through destructive mountaintop removal (MTR) mining. Senator Alexander’s failure to support clean energy perpetuates devastating mining practices and undermines his support for the Great Smokies and our treasured mountain places across Southern Appalachia.
Myth IV: Senator Alexander’s new “Manhattan Project” for energy will help Tennessee’s farmers by making advanced biofuels cost-competitive with gasoline.
Reality IV: Senator Alexander promotes subsidies for nuclear energy instead of biofuels and claims that “nuclear power is the only real technology we have today” to generate clean energy. He has yet to promote subsidies for biofuels in this Congress. In fact, Senator Alexander led the opposition against the “Renewable Energy and Jobs Creation Act of 2008” that the House passed and even voted against it twice in June 2008 when the Senate considered it. This bill would have provided tax incentives for development and production of advanced biofuels as well as other renewable energy sources that could benefit Tennessee’s farmers and consumers alike.
Myth V: Senator Alexander, the ranking member on the Subcommittee for Public Sector Solutions to Global Warming, is a leader in the search for viable solutions to the challenges we face from climate change.
Reality V: In May 2007, despite scientific evidence indicating climate change will contribute to intensity increases in severe weather events, Senator Alexander voted against a measure to require federal agencies to consider the potential impacts of global warming in their program planning. Yet across the country, states and local governments are considering this level of planning in order to meet the challenges ahead. Senator Alexander has also failed to support other comprehensive federal action on climate change in this committee. Senators Lieberman and Warner introduced the Climate Security Act in 2007, and Senate Alexander voted against the legislation in committee in December 2007 and again on the Senate floor in June 2008.
Hello! My name is Andrew Lewis. I'm an official Online Organizing Director for Picken's Plan notifying you of a call to action.
We are gearing up house parties in communities all over the United States to spread the word about Picken's Plan and get communities plugged in to real renewable energy reform.
Since your the creator of this group I was curious if you may know some people making plays in your group who would be interested in hosting a house party. The more house parties the better!
I saw that you were going to sit down with one of our outspoken Senators on wind power. You will likely hear "we don't have the available wind resource." Among other things.
I would like to refer you to a recent study by the Tennessee Valley Authority assessing wind resources that are not on federal lands and state parks. It recognizes that we could harness 8,000 GWh of wind energy, each year, in the state of Tennessee. While wind must be forecasted day to day, it remains constant year to year, therefore we are able to understand how much natural gas, and if there is enough wind, coal, we can save each year through smart grid management.
Dear mr. Garber while it is true we do not have the areas like
Texas that can use wind power.Besides Buffalo Mountain where are some other place in the state that could use wind power, that
\you saw when looking at wind maps . I believe Tennesse could
could probably never more that 10 of it power from the wind. The
sun is another matter altogether., but we are know focusing on
wind power.
Respectfully,
Download the pdf (4 MB) and get a sense of where we have to start.
Then watch us grow and implement a plan to install grid tied solar pv systems on all rooftops, and most importantly, bring an entire City back to life as Carbon Free as possible.
