- Tell us about your experience with alternative energy:
- I am a certified general contractor specializing in sustainable construction; I am currently building the first Earthship in the state of Florida. I am also active in promoting energy cooperatives in this area; I speak publicly as well as organize awareness and activist events. Currently I am working on several projects in the Tampa Bay area that will ultimately become zero-energy structures.
I am currently working with local cooperatives to implement bio-fuel projects that actually increase food yield through polyculture practices.
- What excites you about this campaign?
- I am very interested in any projects that help the transition into renewable energy. My belief is that any renewable projects are going to have to start on the local level; current governmental energy policies fall far short of the dedication that is necessary to make a swift transition to renewable energy. The technology is here now, the resources are under our feet and all around us; it is going to come from citizen demand that we make the switch.
- What do you want to do to help?
- I am currently very active in my area as well as across the southeast in organizing events, speaking publically, and participating on panels to encourage and implement renewable energy projects and sustainable development; I would appreciate any opportunity to tie this message into the events we already have going, as well as look for new opportunities through your organization to promote it any way I can help.

General John Osborn here. I am your District FL-11 Leader for Pickens Plan. We need YOU more than ever. Our organization has evolved and your role has become very clear. Make firm plans to attend our monthly meetings, you will see the Pickens Plan has had new life breathed into it. Bring a friend, we have plenty of seating. Under my leadership you can have a tangible role in the operation of the district. You will be meeting “Mark Sharpe” of the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners at the September meeting. I assure you this will be interesting and informative.

Please visit www.FAREnergy.org - The Florida Alliance for Renewable Energy would like to make Florida a leader in solar energy. Since 1991, Germany, Spain, Denmark, and over 40 other nations, states, and provinces, have pioneered legislation that have proven to promote the fastest, cheapest, and widest growth of renewable energy. In many of these countries these policies are called "Feed-In Tariffs" (FITs). Producers of renewable energy are paid a premium rate or "tariff" for each kilowatt of energy they "feed into" the grid. Here in North America FITs are being called, "Renewable Energy Payments" (REPs). The name has changed but the fundamental principles of these policies stay the same:Everyone who produces renewable energy is guaranteed that they can connect to the power grid and sell their energy to their utility company. There is no limit to the amount of renewable energy that can be sold to utility companies.
Utility companies sign 15-20 year contracts with all their renewable energy producers. All contracts are transparent and open for inspection.
The contracts include long-term agreed upon prices that the utility companies will pay for the energy they buy. The prices are set high enough to be an incentive to new producers and for existing producers to expand their production capacities. Prices vary according to the source of the energy (i.e, sun, wind, water, bio-mass, etc.) and the size of the energy-producing installation.
The utility companies can recoup their increased costs of paying higher prices for renewable energy by spreading these costs among all their customers.
An Independent Review Board is established by the government that periodically sets the prices and terms for new contracts.
How do REPs work?
Renewable Energy Payments are the mechanisms or instruments at the heart of specific state, provincial or national renewable energy policies. REPs are incentives for homeowners, farmers, businesses, etc., to become producers of renewable energy, or to increase their production of renewable energy. As such, they increase our overall production and use of renewable energy, and decrease our consumption and burning of fossil fuels.

THERE IS NO TIME TO DELAY
…to wait and see…or to see if someone else will step up to the plate. It is time for US to roll up our sleeves and go to work. Right now momentum is working in our favor, but if gas prices retreat, the public will forget the pain, and our moment may be lost.
PICKENS U We are recruiting "Campus Coordinators" for colleges and universities to represent the Pickens Plan on campus. We are looking for someone who can create a college page on the Pickens Plan site and also on Facebook encouraging folks to sign up for the Pickens Plan.
If you are connected to a college or university in your state, can be a campus coordinator, or can help find a campus coordinator, please let me know so we can get the process rolling.
PERSONAL ACTION OPTIONS We need to do more than “preach to the choir”. Sharing ideas with each other is encouraging but that will not
1) increase our membership
2) influence public policy.
3) If you know someone who is in the press, or someone who blogs, get them to cover this and ask those in the public eye to support this plan.
