'Green-collar' jobs a growth area, U.S. group says

Companies are stepping up their environmental initiatives, and that may mean a boom in "green-collar" jobs.

A recent forecast by the American Solar Energy Society found that renewable energy and energy-efficient industries were responsible for the creation of nearly 8.5 million jobs in 2006, and by 2030 that number is expected to reach 40 million.

Colleges and universities are taking notice, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc., a job placement consulting group.

Many have introduced specialized degree programs in eco-commerce, environmental accounting, green and social marketing, and ecological economics.

"The demand for 'green-collar' jobs is really exploding, especially as the cost of energy continues to climb," said John Challenger, the group's chief executive. "Students need to start thinking about developing skills that will give them an edge for these types of careers that did not even exist until recently."

Popular jobs include urban planners, forestry professionals and environmental lawyers, Challenger said. There is also a growing demand for architects and engineers with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit.

Thanks for your comments. I know if I can get the word out people will see the potential and bring their passions to it. It is important to me that it is considered to be part of the solution besides solar and wind. Wave power is much great than solar an wind if we can put it to use.

Carla,

My pleasure...It would be great to see people get invovled with this movement and to actually see some change. I think that TBP has got a lot of guts and that this will change out country. The non-profit is a mission organization called Youth With A Mission (YWAM). It is an international, interdenomitational, organization that has a three fold ministry.

Join us at Carbon Neutral as we move forward with our plans to Flip a City.

Vacant Buildings - Holyoke

Download the pdf (4 MB) and get a sense of where we have to start.

Then watch us grow and implement a plan to install grid tied solar pv systems on all rooftops, and most importantly, bring an entire City back to life as Carbon Free as possible.

Hi Carla,
may I ask, who is your "Presidential candidate of choice"?

Greetings

Profile Information

Are you interested in becoming an organizer in your area?
Yes
Tell us about your experience with alternative energy:
I was involved in real estate sales and development on the Big Island of Hawaii for 20 years to buyers wanting to utilize the island's natural resource of sun and wind for alternative building and energy development. I'm planning on focusing my Colorado real estate career on "green building" resources.
What excites you about this campaign?
The commitment to "DO SOMETHING" that makes moral, ethical, fiscal and environmental sense for our communities and country. It's naturally right and time. I want to make sure I've contributed in making a difference so my grandkids will have an environment to enjoy. I have 3 grown daughters and a son and we are all committed to doing whatever we can to make a difference and be conscious of our choices. A big "thank you" to Mr. Pickens who has chosen to use his resources and influence to educate the public and the political arena to the necessity and opportunity for alternative energy.
What do you want to do to help?
I'm open..whatever I can do at the grassroots level in Colorado and personally to inform people of the Plan and network with others to maximize our efforts, including my Presidential candidate of choice.
