Are you interested in becoming an organizer in your area?
Yes
Tell us about your experience with alternative energy:
I am already a community organizer in the Delta region, which includes 55 counties and parishes in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. I've been a longtime activist on many issues, most recently sustainable agri, alternative energy and the environment, working as a parttime design consultant for the last 2 years with the Kellogg Foundation. There are 180 Delta residents working on various issues which adversely affect our poor region, and my small group of 6 have addressed sustainable agri, alternative energy and the environment. We recently have completed and submitted our strategic plan for the Delta region, and we hope to secure funding from several foundations who are interested in investing in the Delta to make substantial changes. Another energy resource I have done research on is geothermal - the Delta, with its' clay soil, is perfect for this energy resource. One problem we encountered is residential loans for alternative energy. Banks are reluctant to provide loans for wind, solar or geothermal; whether its because they don't know much about it, or because of current economic conditions, I don't know. I do know that such loans would offset the working poor's energy needs so that the note would be covered, then when they had the unit paid off, they would be saving a lot more money monthly. We were blessed recently to have a new plant opened in Little Rock which produces the blades for wind power units; it also created some good jobs. I'd like to see more of this across the U.S.
What excites you about this campaign?
EVERYTHING!!!!
What do you want to do to help?
You're preaching to the choir; I research online every day, and disseminate the information to probably 80-100 people, who in turn disseminate it to who knows how many. I'm always surprised and grateful to see the interest and concern that people show on this issue.

Hi, Michael - I agree; our political system now costs so much money that only a few are allowed to run. I'd love to see a return to public debates on tv as a community service, for free; I'd love to see a set financial limit on candidates' financing (I shudder when I see the HUGE sums spent on the last few campaigns; gets larger each election, money that could do so much in our many strapped communities). Cute picture of you and your son; my youngest son just got married Saturday - a happy occasion, but kinda bittersweet!

Hi Charlotte,
My name is Mike and live in Hot Springs, AR. I'm curious Charlotte do you have wind or solar on your home? You say you are on a alt. energy commitee, you know you (anyone) can rent a solar system for their home and all it will cost them is a security deposit $500 - $1000. and then their monthly electricty bill which is based on 2005 rates and rent won't go up for 1, 5 or 25 years.
If this sound interesting to you please come to my page and let me know, I could even come down and talk to you about it. Thanks,
Mike
