Tell us about your experience with alternative energy:

I just moved to Rockville from Brooklyn, NY. Different pace, that's for sure. I'm very interested in better mass transit, walkable neighborhoods, bicycle lanes, grocery shopping within walking/ biking distance.
I want to make sure my switch to other utility energy plans is really meaningful, and that my utility money goes where the mission statement claims it goes.

What excites you about this campaign?

We're way behind Europe. There's no need to reinvent the wheel. We should look over energy saving practices and environmental regulations that they already have, and then develop even better ones right here. I like to see hands-on, grass roots practices that will make us feel less alienated.

What do you want to do to help?

I want to start a farmers market right here in Randolph Hills. This is a 50-year-old suburban community of about 1,000 houses. We should get grant monies, and become a pilot project for installing solar technology on all the houses, upgrading energy efficiency for the entire community.
I want to see lawns converted into less thirsty gardens. I want to see community gardening classes for children and families. We can creaty Victory gardens, or Liberty gardens. Our children will learn how our food comes from our earth, and how we have to husband our resources.

Obama gave a terrific speech Friday from a wind turbine parts manufacturing facility in Ohio. Now is the time to keep up the pressure. We ARE changing the way everyone in this country looks at the energy crisis, and how it directly effects our economy, environment and national security.

I returned from a month long trip last October to Denmark and Germany and continue to be amazed by the efforts of these countries with the addition of Spain are doing to initiate huge programs in alternative energy solutions. Germany and Denmark are at the 20+ % of electricity being generated by wind (+ a lot of solar in Germany). Spain is above 40% of its electricity being produced by wind. There is much written on the Internet about these efforts in Europe and incentives to homeowners, farmers and business people as well. Like you say, the technology is there and we do not have to reinvent the wheel. In America, we need the incentives and then need to implement. We have been kept in the dark for so long about what others are doing to solve their energy needs, cut their carbon footprint and reduce global warming. America is only 5% of the world’s population but we use 25% of the world’s oil. There is something fundamentally wrong with that equation! We need to change our mindset and the mindset of our legislators to choose the right path for the future of America and reduce our dependency on foreign oil. P.S. Google Samso, Denmark and Freiburg, Germany (The Solar Village) to see 2 great examples of what is being done in Europe. I am currently reading the book “The Plan” by Edwin Black and would highly recommend it.
