The proposal is a good one, but first I think we need more of funding from Washington, perhaps under the new Energy Bill, to make these projects economically attractive to organizations other than public utilities. I for one am not sure where Christ…

Chris Christie came up with a major proposal for the use of wind and solar energy. In my view, the most important part of the plan is to allow windmill and solar "farms" to qualify for the state's very generous property tax valuations for agricultur…

Glad to hear that you are going to get the other delegation members involved. It would help if the Pickens Plan could come up with a "sales pitch" to local and state officials for converting buses to natural gas. It would be great if Boone could mak…

I saw this morning that they are now unsure of where the money to complete the tunnel will come from and have already floated the ideas of tax increases and toll increases. This will not fly in this state if ever put up for a vote. I am more convinc…

The latest scoop is that NJ taxpayers may have to fund the Mass Transit Tunnel. How many legislators want to fund that project? I think converting to natural gas buses for NJ Transit should be sold as part of economic stimulus. Each natural gas bus…

How lame is this reasoning? If we were to move to CNG (compressed natural gas) on a wide scale, it would require millions and millions of dollars of capital improvements" at NJ Transit garages, said Dan Stessel, a NJ Transit spokesman." http://www…

The disparity between natural gas prices and oil prices has reached a record level. In other words, the price of natural gas has gotten cheap enough where the extra cost is worth it for economic reasons. The first thing to do is to get an economist…

Excellent point, as I highly doubt that the additional rail tunnel (by the way, with a third level for anyone who prefers to walk!!!) will take away from any vehicle traffic, which seems to be the purpose. I have floated the idea before of beginning…

Still Traveling in the Wrong Direction in New Jersey

On June 7, 2009, Gov. Corzine attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Mass Transit Tunnel. This project will cost 8.7 billion dollars and will allow an additional 25 train trips per hour to New York City. He also recently attended a project to build a rail line from Camden to Glassboro.

The Mass Transit Tunnel will not be operational for 8 years. It is dubious that this project will actually take any cars off the road. More likely it will gain its riders from PATH service or unsubsidiz… Continue

David, I noticed that you are not yet a member of the local Pickens' Plan District Group NJ-04. We are the local group in Monmouth, Ocean, and parts of Mercer County that is trying to mobilize efforts to expand the membership base and work on issues that are important to residents here. Take a look at our web site and sign up if you would like. There are a number of interesting things coming up, and I'd like to add the CNG project to the list.

David, I agree that something should be done concerning the decision made by NJT to abandon their CNG bus program. It may be a good time to explore a joint venture between them, AT&T and NJ Natural Resources to develop refueling sites throughout the state. I know that this was a major reason cited by NJT in their short-sighted decision to discontinue the program. NJ Natural Resources, which supplies residential natural gas here in central NJ also stopped purchasing CNG vehicles for their fleet, citing the same reason. This is despite the fact that they still maintain 2 refueling locations in Lakewood and Wall Twsp.

I would like to start some effort within Pickens' Plan to see if something can be done to broker an arrangement between these large players to facilitate not only the continuation of NJT's project, but an expansion of the CNG concept itself. The State of NJ (ie. the politicians in Trenton) may like to be seen as a pioneer in this future technology.
