Hey David,

Does your area have regular meetings yet for Pickens Plan? If not, I want you to know that ours does and you are welcome to come to any of them. To get information and directions, just go to the Events Tab and look for District FL-11

We arrange guest speakers from the energy industry and political figures from every level of government. For our meeting on August 13th we have "David Gammon" from Progress Energy's Renewable Energy Contracts department and on the following month we have booked "Mark Sharpe" of the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners.

Have a great week,

David;
Bruce Hubbell here. I joined the Central Florida for Pickens group a few weeks ago. We're having a meeting at the Mall at Millinia food court on this coming Sunday from 5pm till 6:30. Mainly just a meet and greet and begin to formulate a plan on getting elected officials on board. If your interested, put the word out to your group.

The cost of pv is about 8.00 per watt. In today's tight credit situation, I don't know that many companies are going to front the cost of PV for home-owners. If you are renting--I think actually it would be a lease--you are paying interest on that as well.

I outfitted my 1997 house for solar at the time of construction for $10,000. It worked great. I sold and moved, and new setup cost $14,500. I am here to dispute the horrendous figures. Greedy solar suppliers price themselves out of the market. And as for cash flow, there are companies who will PUT THE PANELS on your roof for nothing down, X dollars a month, and let you RENT TO OWN just like that cheap furniture store does in your town. Again, when you buy solar, buy HALF of what the advisor/supplier says you need. If it is off, you can add on later. Really. Passit on.

The beauty of Florida is we have hills in the middle backbone of the state that is perfect for wind farms, we have an abundance of solar and we have 3000 miles of coastline some of which can be designated for wave farms.

Instead, the only Florida alternative to oil and coal seems to be a recent resurgence in the idea of two new nuclear plants at Crystal River. Burying ourselves in nuclear waste is nothing we should consider passing on to our children.

Wind speeds in Florida average only 8.56 mph, which is not great, but with the right government incentives, and a modification of zoning/HOA rules, a case can be made for residential generation. However, the power companies, at least Progress Energy, pays a pittance for purchased power compared to what we have to pay them. We should learn from Germany in this regard.

By the way, we should consolidate some of these groups into one area-wide with common shared interests and potential action.
