Tell us about your experience with alternative energy:
I studied the potential use of wind and solar as far back as 1970s. I have seen the down side of gas rationing, economic problems of inflation due to increasing fuel costs. Currently, I use all electric lawn grooming (mower) machinery, refusing to use gasoline for this. I am very committed to green solutions, where I can use them. Company I work for, Fujifilm, and my division, Photo Imaging, is currently seeing a movement away from chemistry to dry- inkjet-photo processing technologies and I am fully instrumental in supporting the rollout of this to our customers--it is time to do the right things for the environment and our sustainability.
What excites you about this campaign?
I fully support the use of wind resources--who can argue that it is not a good thing in the Midwest? It is in relatively rural settings, and not visually unattractive. It is non-polluting, relatively free (after initial investments and periodic turbine and transmission maintenance), available now, and has no known depletion curve. Removing NG from electric generation and moving it to transportation will reduce the total greenhouse gas load in U.S. by reducing petroleum usage. I believe in the urgency of this issue--I agree it is in the category of emergency--and our economic health and survival as a nation depends on our ability to act now.
I believe you need an act of congress to phase out gasoline-fueled small and midsize vehicles production and sale by a certain date, in a manner similar to what was done to mandate seatbelt installation in all cars, several years back. Car manufacturers and Oil companies have no track record of initiating these changes on their own, so it will take legislation and the declaration of a national oil and economic emergency to force a supply-side change in the type of vehicles available for new purchase. In the same vein, legislation is needed to ensure NG pumps at fueling stations nationwide, to provide the needed convenience to drivers--these last two points are perhaps what is missing in the general level of presentation of the "plan". More needs to be said and done to push for consumer and supplier adoption of the NG option. Consumers will not invest in vehicles that may become obsolete if the plan falls through on the NG side. Otherwise, I love the environmental benefit of using wind.
What do you want to do to help?
I will spread word via emails, word of mouth. I would write a letter to a congressman. I would write persuasive materials for inclusion on the website. I would drive a new hybrid electric / NG car to and from work daily (I recently spent $2K on my '92 Honda Accord in order to renew it for another two years--hoping by that time that technology will have settled in on a particular format, before I layout cash to buy another vehicle)--make me a case study.
