Are you interested in becoming an organizer in your area?
Maybe--But Not Sure What to Organize
Tell us about your experience with alternative energy:
I am happy to see people beginning to invest in solar panels around my neighborhood and the bay area, but it is too bad that it has taken so long since its introduction in the 70s for it to become widely accepted. In 1985 as an undergraduate at the University of Pennsylvania, I wrote a research paper about wind energy as a possible source of alternative energy, centering on the Altamont Pass windfarm. My professor, who had helped put together the ENIAC computer, was disbelieving that the technology was actually being used, and I had to tell him that yes, I had seen it with my own eyes. Maybe he was prompted to study the field himself, but I cannot say whether he pursued the idea.
What excites you about this campaign?
It is far reaching and proposes a practical way to provide a significant amount of energy nationwide through clean sources. It can be supplemented by wind farms offshore, to provide twice as much energy, too. It also promotes cleaner running automobiles, which is critical for both fuel economy and a healthier, sustainable environment. Some may disagree, but I like the fact that an "oilman" who knows the energy field and knows business, is putting his vision and resources behind this, because I think that that kind of entrepreneurial spirit is what is needed to spur on such a major change and see it succeed.
What do you want to do to help?
I am happy to help with advocacy with my representative leaders in Washington, and to help raise awareness in my community.

WASHINGTON — Consumers could get up to $4,500 each to help replace old gas-guzzling cars — as long as they turn in their old ones — under a plan that's gained strong support from the White House and leaders of Congress.

Low-cost loans spark interest in electric cars

By Janis Mara

BERKELEY — Norma Myers, a Berkeley psychotherapist, has long dreamed of purchasing an electric car. Now she can swing the deal thanks to an arrangement between an electric vehicle dealership and a long-standing credit union here.

Bucking the national trend of tight credit, Berkeley's 67-year-old Cooperative Center Federal Credit Union has agreed to finance 100 percent of the purchase price of a ZENN electric car at Berkeley… Continue

Parking garages to offer electric car outlets

State of the art electric car charging stations coming to Contra Costa County

Gas prices go up, down, then back up again, but Bill Segraves doesn't care.

Most days he ignores the truck and two gas-guzzling Cadillacs in his Pleasant Hill driveway and takes his all-electric GEM to work, where he simply plugs it into the wall outlet to recharge.

He dreams of the day when all cars will be electric.

Ca bill proposes to increase renewable energy standard

(From http://www.sierraclubca.blogspot.com/)

Renewable Energy bill moves forward

California takes the first step in reforming the state’s renewable portfolio standards law.

On Tuesday March 3, 2009, the Senate’s Energy, Utilities and Communications Committee passed Senate Bill 14 by Senator Joe Simitian. If enacted, SB 14 would increase the required amount of renewable energy sources in California’s portfolio to 33 percent by 2020 and make other necessary reforms to our state’s… Continue

Sorry for the long delay in getting back to you. The Points system in California and MAss. is based upon a "fleet' rating for a large volume car manufacturer. In order to be allowed to sell higher polluting vehicles in great number, the manufacturer must build and sell in the state a minimum number of extremely low polluting vehicles, thereby "averaging" out the emissions across the models offered. The State's have developed a points system for the differing levels of emissions, more points for low emissions, so the manufacturer gets a pile a points and "spends" them on selling high polluters. Essentially the GX is sold at a loss in order to sell Honda SUV's and Minivans...

The Inhofe bill has more to do with the conversions, the Emanuel Bill is more on the infrastructure and manufacturing of new vehicles.

Hi Debra,

We all share the same goal; to rid ourselves of foreign oil and clean up our environment for our children and grandchildren. Wind energy is a viable alternative. Some of us have a different ideas of what we can do for immediate relief.

Check out our group "Live Carbon Free" and see how we are promoting conservation and environmental stewardship as the bridge to future energy developments. Regardless of what we do, it will take some time to implement on a significant scale. For immediate results we can make a huge difference by conserving what we have.

We would like for you to join our group and value your input. Feel free to add me as a friend.

Debra, you commented about ETT: "... I am having trouble figuring out if it is like a monorail or a tube people are "floating" in. Certainly it is requiring a good deal of investment and capital. ... It would be great if we could get past our carbon based system ..."

Debra,
With ETT, travel in car sized, magnetically levitated vehicles, takes place in tubes that have virtually all the air permanently removed, so ETT is like "space travel on earth" (tm). Since the ETT vehicles weigh less than 1/100th as much as locomotives, the infrastructure costs are less than 1/10th the cost of HSR, and under 1/4th the cost of freeways.

ETT is faster than jets, yet requires 1/50th as much energy as electric cars or electric trains. There is much more info on the et3 website

Debra,
Thank you for your many comments on the "We are TRANSPORTATION dependent -- not oil dependent." thread. I hope you visit my page and the ETT group to learn more about how ETT offers everything you claim to desire about trains, AND uses 1/50th as much energy, and can be built for less than 1/10th the cost.

I am much older than you and have been through this three or four times. Alternatives are a piece of the puzzle but only a small player in the short run. Oil will be prime for the next ten to twenty years and then start to be replaced with new technologies. I will electric motor was invented steam engines and belt/pulley system provided the power for industry. How long di it take to change over to the superior electric motor? Would you believe 50 years. (source Stanford University economics department white paper)
circa 1960?

The point being we have so much invested in the gasoline transportation system it will take many years to convert to a new paradigm. The poor can not afford new cars and they must get to their jobs. All worker can not sell their house and move to bike distance form their jobs. It would take huge displacements of people to use the European design of large urban cities and train systems. America has proved the majority does not like bus/train transportation because unlike Europe it is a long distance from New York city to Los Angles so air travel is available to even cities with 10,000 population.

I support development of "all" forms of energy but am realistic oil/gas/coal will be a big part for a long time. The quicker we build a few hundred nuclear plants the quicker we can get off oil.
