Maybe--But Not Sure What to Organize
Tell us about your experience with alternative energy:
6 years ago my wife and I bought an 1880's fixer upper that had no insulation and the original windows. In addition to insulating the entire house and replacing all but 2 of the window (we can't get to them yet because they are behind the kitchen sink - go figure) we had a Buderus furnace installed. At the same time we installed a Harmon pellet stove. That's the positive. The negative is that just as we were about to install solar panels that would have supplemented our hot water heating system (We have the old cast iron radiators, which can act as thermal storage during the day.), the state of Maine ran out of the funds it had targeted for alternative energy installations as a rebate, which we could have used as a down payment on a system that syphons excess heat from the domestic hot water system. Randy Sprague, our plumbing and heating provider said that when we came home from work, we might have to change into shorts and T-shirts for a few hours. That would be a small sacrifice to make for the reduction in oil usage. Maine is really going to be in trouble this winter. We have an extremely high percentage of older homes and I believe that we have one of the the highest percentages of homes that are heated by oil so not being able to reduce our oil usage is heart breaking.
What excites you about this campaign?
It exists. Someone in addition to Al Gore is addressing the issue and has come at it from a different perspective.
I believe that this plan can bring to light the fact that we need to move away from the centralized supply systems we have now and adopt smaller, perhaps even neighborhood based, networked solar and wind systems.
What do you want to do to help?
I'm a middle school teacher. I want to share the plan with our students. Our children need to understand that there is hope, not only for our country economically but for the health of the world.
