Profile Information

Are you interested in becoming an organizer in your area?
Yes
Tell us about your experience with alternative energy:
I am a High School Technology Teacher in Russell, Ky and I have recently started teaching 3 state approved high school courses in alternative and renewable energy. I am teaching installation, service, repair and engineering design concepts of wind turbines and solar arrays. We are doing a scientific comparitive study to see which is best for our region. My students and I built a 1kw windturbine 19m tall and it sits outside my classroom. I want to help train americas workforce for the upcoming shift in energy generation.
What excites you about this campaign?
That someone besides a politician is taking the lead in getting the word out there. I work with NEED out of manassass ,Va. The National Energy Education Devlopment project and we put together energy curriculum on a national level for all ages and grades and to put a name a face like yours with what we do is awesome.
What do you want to do to help?
Anything I can, but I need some details.

If we 'friend' and you accept my invitation, it is easier for me to mail interesting stuff fast when it comes along.

Good luck on your projects. I'll get back to you later when I have more time.

Doug...if you need art or design work for use to promote alternative energy, it is what I am doing since retiring from teaching. I am a geekette (is that a word?) and artist. Pictures are worth a thousand words. I am doing a coloring book for the local convention and tourist center locally. Coloring or comic books kids will read. They will not read a thousand words in a book.

I imagine you are much younger than I, since you are still in the classroom. I had so much fun in my teaching career. I was a science/math/computer science teacher by title, but I always was able to weave my passion into my classes ~ the arts. One of my little projects turned into a major play. We acted out the water cycle. It was supposed to be just an in-class activity, but we ended up taking our play to all the middle schools. Gosh, the kid who played the bad guy... sulfur... most likely has his own kids now. He was a hoot in that role with his black cape. He swooped down to capture these sweet little 7th grade girls converting them to acid rain.

I taught in a tough inner city school where these things were not done too often... budget was low and there were always behavior problems. The other teachers loved me. After my class the kids were all energized and excited. It made it tough for the kids to sit in the traditional styled classes that followed after mine.

We did environmental songs to Disney tunes. We did our songs at Earth Day with a coloring book to promote recycling... the kids did the drawing... along with "AL" who was a huge aluminum trash can with huge cartoon eyes, soda bottles and cans for arms and legs. AL sat in my classroom for a few years later until he got old and faded. When I finally decided to get rid of AL, no room any more, the janitor took him. I thought he was going to use the can and destroy Al, but rather he kept AL in the custodian closet for I don't know how many more years.

As educators, we can change the future ideas and concepts We did a great job with recycling. Look how that has changed. It is not perfect, but a long way from what it was when first a new concept. Right? You have the power and influence in your job.

Sorry for the delay in responding. I think you would find the book I wrote for the middle school kids outdated. It was written when the electric car was a conversion Omni for PPL. So much progress has been made since then. I had the car for one week to drive to school. It was a wonderful experience. At that time, this was considered something new. The electric car is not new, in fact, it is said Henry Ford's wife had an electric car. My little book was cute though. It had a girl car with huge eyelashes. I was a science teacher, but my passion is art. Her name was EV (cute as a button) and she took children on a tour of the electric vehicle. Perhaps I should update and do this again. It was fun to create this book. It was distributed for free to teachers in PA. I remember that at one point teachers were promoting recycling. We did such a great job, that aluminum prices were driven down. The youth hold the key to future success. They will influencing the future. A drive to get them interested would be effective.

Key Policy Recommendations for a Cleaner, Greener Energy Future

* Provide multiyear tax incentives for renewable-energy production and energy-efficiency projects.

* Set national mandates that would require utilities to get at least 20 percent of their electricity from wind, solar and geothermal energy by 2020.

* Add and updating the building code to require energy-efficiency measures in the construction of new buildings and the renovation of existing buildings, and setting a goal to reduce buildings' energy use 50 percent by 2030.

* Set prices for carbon-dioxide emissions and creating a program that caps emissions from different industries and allowing companies to trade emissions allowances.

* Upgrade and expanding the nation's electric grid to enable it to support electric cars and the transport and storage of renewable energy.

* Provide incentives for utilities to invest in energy-efficiency technologies.

* Increase the fuel efficiency of cars and trucks and investing more money in private-public partnerships that would develop transportation systems that rely on little or no oil, such as electric cars.

* Provide incentives to consumers and small businesses to buy plug-in hybrid cars and alternative fuels, including natural-gas-powered cars.

* Invest more federal dollars in cleantech research and development, including ways to capture and store carbon-dioxide emissions from coal-fired power plants.

* Speed up the process of setting aside public lands and improving the permitting process for renewable-electricity projects on public lands.

* Shift from ethanol made from corn to ethanol made from wood chips, agricultural waste and other nonfood feedstock, and encouraging a joint U.S.-Brazil partnership to turn sugar cane into ethanol in the Caribbean.
