Profile Information

Are you interested in becoming an organizer in your area?
Yes
Tell us about your experience with alternative energy:
Exploring the ideas, technology and resources for privately owned "off-the-grid" rural homeowners, farmers and especially Native American Tribes. I have experience in FERC relicensing negotiatons for the St. Lawrence-FDR Hydroproject (1997 - 2001) and the plethora of issues that were adressed through a constructive consultation process. During this process I represented Tribal interests in developing a settlement agreement and an important Memorandum of Understanding.
What excites you about this campaign?
This is the only realistic solution to the crisis at hand. Clearly this is where Vision intersects with Reality, the point in time where the nation will guarantee an energy independent future or opt to slide into a dark age with terrible unforseen consequences.
What do you want to do to help?
Represent my area of interest and ensure that Native American Tribes are not forgotten in the deployment of a new electrical grid and affordable technology.

China manufacturers Inexpensive Wind Turbines for Mass Consumption

A recent news report mentioned that Chinese manufacturers were heeding the call to make low-cost wind turbines for worldwide distribution. With soaring energy demand in China alone, they have good reason to do so. Naturally, there are other burgeoning nations with high energy demands that stand to benefit from low cost energy products, as well. The list of these nations includes India and Brazil, so between the three of them there is sure to be enough business to last half a millennium.

Investing in Energy? Maybe Not such a good idea after all.

A major Wind Turbine Energy development company in Northern New York is calling it quits after the financial debacle on Wall Street destroyed a major investor. The company is unlikely to take this as anything more than an inconvenient set-back, sure to ask for government assistance, or even a bail-out. The problem for investors, however, is that the government always takes first position on the financial operations, so if there's any profit, the government gets paid first. Not such a good thing… Continue

Transportation, Technology and Innovation and 1984

The dismal economy is casting a long dark shadow over technology and innovation and the best solution the government can come up with is to rebuild roads and bridges. Oh, there are "green" jobs in the works, but exactly what that means and whether or not investing taxpayer's green in "green" things is ecomonically sustainable hasn't been given much thought. After all, once something is clean and green, do you still need to spend the same amount of money on it? Maybe a little bit of dirt is good,… Continue

Do you want to buld an Army or a Movement?

I just received an e-mail, which all subscribers to the Push Pickens Plan surely have. It begins with one word; Army.

I replied as follows: "Please do not refer to me, or us as "Army". That implies a war. You are seeking to build a movement. If you want a war, you have come to the wrong person."

The word "Army" as overtones and connotations that creates friction among some people. While it is intended to imply strength and unity under a single command, it also implies slow progress, destructio… Continue

The Wind in My Backyard

I've decided that I should build my own wind generator and ride the wind in my backyard. I've researched it and I have the expertise and some of the parts it's going to take. The most important part, naturally, is a generator. Just so happens that I've been storing an old electric lawn mower motor for nearly thirty years. I hooked a voltmeter to it, gave it a spin, and Voila! 12VDC!.

Next step is to build the propeller blades, the mount, the inverter, the battery bank and the electrical control… Continue

Francis,
Unfortunately the somewhat environmentally friendly aspect of Hydro power is a big contention here on Kaua'i. We are suffering from loss of indigenous species from unwanted invaders and even though we have a virtually unlimited source of water the proposed loss/change of species habitat due to re-routing our streams for hydropower will undoubtably worsen this problem. We have plenty of water, wind, and sun but unfortunately like most of the rest of the world we are still living in the dark age of carbon. At least the present crisis will perhaps motivate us into the new age of renewables.

Francis,
TRANSPORTATION is the master key to basic survival, and the cornerstone of the economy. We all know that transportation presently depends on oil production, and oil production is peaking. We must focus first on transportation – it is the highest priority. The PickensPlan to transition vehicles to natural gas is a great start toward 100% energy independence, but is a stop-gap measure till we can transition to all electric transportation. Electric energy is strained without adding transportation demands; so we must implement drastic efficiency improvement.
Evacuated Tube Transport (ETT) is a patented technology where travel occurs without air friction or rolling resistance (like “Space Travel on Earth”); ETT can accomplish 50 times more transportation per kWh (or carbon credit) than electric cars or trains. ETT is silent, low cost, safe, faster than jets, and is electric so it can make maximum use of wind or PV power. I invite you to visit my page to learn more about ETT

The presidency of George Bush is quickly waning into oblivion. The do-nothing democratic controlled congress is focused on the elections and political theatre. While an Open Letter may be well intended, it may also be wasted energy.

New energy and a new vision for the future may arrive in January 2009. Or it could remain relatively unchanged. Depends on the national priority, to wit: the economy, the wars, the housing fiasco, national health plans, and now a fathomless national debt that won't be paid, perhaps ever. The current situation reminds me of the waning presidency of Jimmy Carter and how the nation was paralyzed by seemingly unsolvable problems.

Yet the first step has indeed been taken. The Pickens Plan is a bold move towards partial resolution of energy demand problems. However, the nation has yet to turn off the lights. In other words, there can be no national energy crisis as long as the national demand for electricity remains unchanged. The energy solution, as so many health care professionals will tell you, lays in prevention more that in treatment. The Pickens Plan is a treatment approach towards a cure, a band-aid approach to curing melanoma. Somebody has to tell the patient that he is at serious risk of dying.

That's my point. If we are aiming to make change and institute a cure, than we need to tell the patient or nation in this case, that we are seriously ill and we must make changes to our lifestyle if we are going to be cured. We don't need to tell the doctors or nurses, because they already know it, but are busy with other priorities or making money from lobbyists and energy interest groups.

I would support an open letter to the next president and the next congress, and hope that their new energy will help us find sources and solutions for new energy, such as possible from the Pickens Plan. Oil is the energy of dinosaurs.

I was just on Helium and read your excellent posts there. (I had never heard of Helium.) I hadn't thought of the Native American Nations having land for wind farms..being in the city, don't know much about the West. Is there an Native American PickensPlan group?
