- I've worked in the natural gas industry for the past 25 years natural gas distribution companies. I was present in the 80's as the cng market tried to get started but eventually died do to the lack of support and excessive regulations brought on by EPA. For the cng market to flourish today regulators will have to ease the restrictions on the conversion market as $15,000 costs to convert vehicles will never fly. The automakers will not make the investment into the market today because of the bad experiences of the past and because they believe electric power is their future. Unfortunately someone needs to educate the public that electric energy for vehicles has to be generated first and today that energy comes from fossil fuels. If you take into consideration of the source vs. site efficiency of electicity then you will realize that electic power is only as clean as the coal, natual gas, oil and nuke energy used to create it. Also as Pickens has illustrated in his plan shifting natural gas burned to generate power to cng don't forget that shifting electric appliances to natural gas (electric water heaters to natural gas) for example will eliminate hundreds of thousands of tons of CO2, reduce the demand for new power plants by using the most efficient energy for the job. Remember when taking into consideration the source efficiency of electric power 30% to natural gas 90% you are saving 60% of the energy by simply swapping out an electric appliance for an efficient natural gas appliance.
- What excites you about this campaign?
- I'm excited that someone is finally (on a large scale) is bringing this issue and a solution to the public's attention. For so long our country and government have stuck our heads in the sand hoping that the problem would go away. Unfortunately the only things that are going away are oil and our cash to foreign governments. Natural gas as Pickens points out is clean, domestic and abundant. He's not even mentioned the potential sources of natural gas from methane hydrates and he needs to do this too.
- What do you want to do to help?
- For Picken's plan to work he's going to have to win the support and seek advice from the natural gas industry. AGA, APGA, and the newly created CRE (Council for Responsible Energy). These associations represent nearly all natural gas utilities across the country. If he hasn't already done so he needs to meet with these groups and involve them in the plan.

…to wait and see…or to see if someone else will step up to the plate. It is time for US to roll up our sleeves and go to work. Right now momentum is working in our favor, but if gas prices retreat, the public will forget the pain, and our moment may be lost.

PERSONAL ACTION OPTIONSWe need to do more than “preach to the choir”. Sharing ideas with each other is encouraging but that will not 1) increase our membership nor 2) influence public policy. If you know someone in the press or someone who blogs - get them to cover this. Ask those in the public eye to support this plan.
