Are you interested in becoming an organizer in your area?
Maybe--But Not Sure What to Organize
What excites you about this campaign?
Bringing people together for a common purpose. Giving our children and grandchildren a better life by helping to cut our dependence on forigen oil.
What do you want to do to help?
The following is part of a letter I wrote to Senators Harry Reed and John Ensign of Nevada. If all of our Nevada members wrote to them it might start them thinking. If the rest of our members from the other states could write to their Senators, that would help in their states too.

I live in the desert southwest. Laughlin is in the southern tip of Nevada. Up until a couple of years ago we had a coal fired power plant here. The Mohave Generating Station is still here but it was closed down because the owners of the plant said it was not cost effective to put scrubbers on the smoke stack to help clean the air.
Be that as it may, the land and infrastructure is still there.
The Mohave Generating Station sits on approximately 2,490 acres of desert terrain.
The majority of the property is undeveloped desert terrain. About 40 acres of the 2,490 acres is in use in other projects.

The ownership of this property is divided up 4 ways.
56% - Southern California Edison Company
20% - Salt River Project (Arizona)
14% - Nevada Power Company
10% - Los Angeles Department of Water and Power

All of this land is just setting unused under the HOT desert sun. We probably have 320+ days a year of sunshine here and it is just being absorbed by the earth.

I have often wondered why the owners of the Mohave Generating Station haven’t converted it to a solar plant. All of the power transmission lines are still here and most of the infrastructure is here already.

I would like to see the State of Nevada get involved and using their clout to get something done. Turning this site into a Solar Generating Station and adding some Wind Turbines would create jobs and help ease our dependence on foreign oil.

Hi Gordon

The only way to insure the success of this historical effort is to build our numbers to monumental and unignorable heights. CAN YOU HELP?

Would you please congratulate our newest 100CLUB member, Chris Jones-

Greetings Gordon,
Our cost effective, new rooftop mount home wind turbine kits that I am building are great. The profile is pretty sleek and attractive. The system is actually a home appliance and doesn't really stand out much more than an antennae, chimney, or satellite dish. This makes a nice clean way for homeowners to get into the clean energy movement. The systems are inexpensive, easy to install and scaleable.

These systems have wind/solar built right in. The wind is stronger in the winter months, sun is stronger in the summer months, we designed a system that is attractively priced, that gives an even flow of energy year round. Wind power scales down in size to be perfectly feasible for a homeowner sized system to provide power for their home. Many customers have found it easy to become wind turbine customer/dealers. They are able to do this with no further investment and they see how easy people are to get interested.

I have used them to save money on my electricity costs and Gordon, you could too. The systems pay for themselves in 5 to 10 years depending on your local wind resources, and they last for 25 or 30 years before needing a rebuild. Have a look at these windmaps and see can you pinpoint what number your area is in. 2 is OK and anything over 2 is very good. Let's double check your wind resources are good.

Gordon, sorry to be out of touch.

I have been slammed at work and was also hoping ithers would step up in my absence.
We will get things back on track, but i agree that everyone has to be a contributor.

Gordon, we first spoke with California Edison four years ago about converting the Mohave Generating Station to Solar. They were not interested. At that time they were attempting to continuing the operation as one of the worst polluting power plants in the nation. I am developing a sustainability demonstration project in your area. If there is anything I can do to help let me know. Perhaps we can cooperate.

Welcome aboard Gordon!
It sounds like you have done the groundwork for a grand plan. Good luck, and keep us apprised of your progress.
Maybe you can find a way to convert this into a multi-source power complex, and a platform for alternative power generation.
To learn more about what you can do, read here from the members and focus groups here in the Pickens Plan.

Feel free to join the most dynamic Alternative Energy Group:

Hello Gordon, the Mohave Generating Station in limbo is a strange situation.
Have you noticed that Mohave is between Boone Pickens' wind farm in Pampa Texas and Los Angeles?

Large Wind farms are cost competitive provided the site has a good wind resource.
Have you checked the wind resource map for your area?
Make enquiries with the American Wind Energy organisation.
http://www.awea.org/

Research is continuing on Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) for hot arid sites.
Micro turbine company Capstone has just received an order to modify their gas fired micro turbine for use with CSP.

http://www.microturbine.com
Keep tabs on their progress; maybe your local power station could be returned to use in future when CSP is commercially viable.

Also try to find out from the Pickens plan which routes they are considering for the power lines to connect the Pickens wind farms to the West Coast. By coincidence, you are between the wind farm in Pampa Texas and Los Angeles. As your power transmission lines are still there, maybe Boone Pickens might be interested in connecting to the existing power lines rather than paying for a new power line on a different route.
