Are you interested in becoming an organizer in your area?
Maybe--But Not Sure What to Organize
Tell us about your experience with alternative energy:
Both of our cars were converted for E85 over 2 yrs ago in the good faith belief that cellulosic-based ethanol would soon be forthcoming. Ha. But to those naysayers who contend ethanol saves nothing, behold my Audi A8: Sure, economy dropped 19% from 15.5 to 12.5 mpg, but so did fuel cost, by 25% (3.59 for E85 compared with 4.79 for 93 octane gas it wd otherwise use). And I smile when I fill up, knowing I'm no longer fattening OPEC.
What excites you about this campaign?
Hopefully it addresses the big picture. Ultimately we need electricity independent of petroleum input, from wind, solar, wave power...as well as diesel supplements from vegetable sources and algae. And at long last, we need cellulosic-based ethanol from switchgrass, sugar beets, sugar cane (already underway in Florida). And we need to take a serious look at butanol, a more efficient energy source than ethanol, more readily distributable, usable without convertors in gas-burning cars. But we have to address the short term simultaneously: Unless we drill domestically for oil offshore & in Alaska, and also seek to convert our vast coal reserves to liquid fuel, we will have no affordable energy during the several years it will take to develop nonpetroleum sources. (Certainly drillng will not help us if that oil merely enters the international market, because the Saudis need only shut down their production commensurately. But we must devise a way to direct such domestic oil to domestic refineries, just as we must process & use liquified coal for our own benefit.)
What do you want to do to help?
I have little expendable money, but I can communicate, & possibly succeed in arousing interest among my colleagues who in turn may be able to generate political & other support.
