Yes
Tell us about your experience with alternative energy:
I am trying to encourage the taxi company I work for to convert all of their cars to run CNG to help lower Portland's emissions, but so far, I haven't been able to. The company is driver-owned, and the elected Board has to be convinced.
The company, Radio Cab, is resistant to change because they had a semi-successful test run years ago and are reluctant to try it again. Misinformation about the fuel's safety and difficulty abounds. Some of our drivers are convinced there are more than 1,000 parts in a conversion kit so it would be too expensive and difficult to install. Our General Manager said conversions would be a good idea "if you like driving around with an H-bomb in your trunk." You and I know it's safer than gasoline, and with a little explaining and encouragement, I believe we can get them to adopt natural gas as a fuel.
Another factor that I've run into is that Portland is currently wrapped up in a love affair with biodiesel and has very few CNG stations. Because they are only focused on biodiesel and ethenol as alternative fuels, they are neglecting CNG. Converting a fleet will create an immediate demand for CNG that was not there before, creating the CNG infrastructure.
What excites you about this campaign?
The results that have already been achieved excite me the most, because what I want most for America is a switch from using petroleum to natural gas for transportation, and I believe that the PickensPlan is best way to do that. Wind energy is vital to our survival in the future, and the Texas wind farms, especially the infrastructure improvements to support it, is very inspiring. Oregon has the right idea, but currently they are at risk in overloading the existing system and are bickering about who will pay to upgrade it. PickensPlan gets results, and that is exciting!
What do you want to do to help?
I want to make the conversions happen, whatever it takes. I would work with Portland's taxi companies to develop a conversion plan. I am prepared to apply for carbon offset funding on behalf of the project, solicit donations from local companies, do fundraisers, really anything to make the conversion appealing to Portland's taxi drivers.
Because really, in the future, I want to see our taxis run on biomethane sequestered from landfills or manure, but it has to start with conversions.
