- I have a Masters Degree in Environmental Engineering, with an under graduate in Civil Engineering. My interests in energy have started in promoting Bio-Fuels, however I am not your prototypical Environmentalist type.
As an engineer I understand the limitations of Bio Fuels, and the risks of importing oil from the Middle East. Like you, I have a strong interest in protecting our country from an almost certain national disaster.
- What excites you about this campaign?
- We do not agree completely on solutions, but we agree completely on the problem. Like you however, I have no problem supporting any American Solution. I believe a National Energy Plan has to mandate change.
I think a National Energy Plan has to start with car gasoline MPG mandates. Jimmy Carter set MPG limits in the 70's, but this has not been continued. I would also force manufactures to meet certain minimum hybrid electric standards or go exclusively to Natural Gas, E85, Hydrogen, etc. Congress must force change, not just hope Americans make the right buying decisions.
- What do you want to do to help?
- I am currently applying pressure in the Senate. I have contacted our representatives locally. I have contacted John McCain expressing my concerns.
I have also used my small zone of influence to promote the Pickins Plan.

Enter your message in the edit box, enter Senator Obama’s mailing address and then click preview on the bottom of the page. If you approve of the card just click send. The card will be printed and put into the mail the very next day.

I understand completely. That is why I put the long hair and sandals remark in my previous post. Sometimes people do not realize you can be both an engineer and an environmentalist.
I find it interesting that you have a Master's in Environmental Engineering but are not a how did you put it prototypical Environmentalist type. I would consider myself an environmentalist though I do not have long hair, wear sandals, or hug trees. As a school trained engineer (EE) I did not embrace my training but went into construction instead. For years I have advocated what people now term "green building" techniques and philosophies, not that it did much good. For years I have priced building designs with solar power and water heating, insulated windows, solar powered attic fans, “smart home” designs, and such only to be shot down the majority of the time. Sometimes due to cost versus gain, but most time just because it is not what people wanted.
Like you my Uncle was a Civil Engineer in Florida for most of his life. My uncle advised me one time that you can only do what people want, no matter how short sighted that may be, because ultimately they are the ones that are footing the bill. It’s funny that our government does not work the same way.
Please excuse my abrupt remarks in the "IT’S THE ECONOMY AGAIN STUPID!!!!!!!!"

TRANSPORTATION is the master key to basic survival, and the cornerstone of the economy. We all know that transportation presently depends on oil production, and oil production is peaking. We must focus first on transportation – it is the highest priority. The PickensPlan to transition vehicles to natural gas is a great start toward 100% energy independence, but is a stop-gap measure till we can transition to all electric transportation. Electric energy is strained without adding transportation demands; so we must focus on drastic efficiency improvement.
Evacuated Tube Transport (ETT) is a patented technology where travel occurs without air friction or rolling resistance (like “Space Travel on Earth”); ETT can accomplish 50 times more transportation per kWh (or carbon credit) than electric cars or trains. ETT is silent, low cost, safe, faster than jets, a fourth the cost of freeways (yet over 10 times the capacity), and is electric so it can make maximum use of wind or PV power.
