- Tell us about your experience with alternative energy:
- As a recently retired Property Manager for General Services Administration my first encounter with alternative energy was solar water heat collection system for the Carbondale Federal Building in Carbondale IL in 1982. That system was designed to supply 50% of the facility's heat and 25% of it's cooling (hot water lithium bromide units). From 1984 through 2005 maintenance groups I managed won 7 DOE energy reduction awrds for various buildings from IL, WI, MN, and TN. My team was able to get the US Courthouse in Milwaukee certified as Energy Star, the first government building in WI to achieve the designation. Recently the John J Duncan FB in Knoxville won the BOMA Earth Award. It was the second federally-owned building in GSA's inventory to earn a LEED EB certification.
Solar electric panels and solar hot water heating are the only alternative energy sources I've had experience with. But I've been committed to greening and energy efficiency efforts for over 25 years now.
One of the things I felt make my federal career a sucess was my office's continuing efforts in improving energy efficiency.
- What excites you about this campaign?
- Since the oil shortage in the 70's our leadership has never provided any plan that was as simple and to the point of what I've just read. The fear of big oil losing money was far more important than addressing a plan to reduce USA's dependency on oil. The plan leaves plenty of room for the rich to get richer but I'd much rather re-strengthen America than further enrich those countries we buy oil from.
- What do you want to do to help?
- I want a future for my grandchildren so there's litte I'n not willing to do. I'm a simple straight forward man and a quick learner. Immediatelly I can share my expertise in low cost/no cost energy maintenance for homes and buildings.
