Tell us about your experience with alternative energy:

After I graduated from college, I moved to Copenhagen to work as a biochemist at a small pharmaceutical start-up. While I lived in Denmark, I commuted exclusively by bicycle, and on the weekends, aided by the fact that Denmark is a small country, I would take cycling excursions up and down the coast. The coastline of Denmark is dotted with offshore wind turbines as far as the eye can see, and to me, it is nothing short of magnificent. Due to progressive energy policies set in place in the 1970's during the oil embargo, Denmark now gets close to 20% of its energy demands from renewable sources, namely wind. The cost of owning a car is quite high, which has encouraged most people there to embrace small, fuel-efficient cars. Having seen the strides that the Danes have made toward energy efficiency, I returned to the United States in 2003 as a graduate student studying alternative energy-- fuel cells.

I didn't quite make it through my PhD program, but I am leaving with an Engineer's Degree after 5 years. I've switched gears since then, moving to the SF Bay area where I now work for a small start-up that is studying lithium-ion batteries. At the rate that I'm going, I'll set my sights on solar in 5 years, and synthetic biofuels in about 10, God-willing.

What excites you about this campaign?

The potential to change the energy infrastructure, not just in the United States, but around the world and it's ramifications in the areas of the environment, national security, and foreign policy. As a science geek, it's refreshing to see energy issues coming to the forefront of the national dialogue.

with your circle of friends, family and associates. Urge them to JOIN. From your own experience you know it is very much like simply signing a petition. The larger our membership the more likely we will be successful in getting Congress to provide effective incentives for alternative and renewable energies and in insuring that our future president will treat energy independence as a matter of the greatest urgency, applying the same kind of leadership as JFK exercised when he led us with his stirring challenge to put a man on the moon in 10 years. Please take the time today to bring 5 new members to the site.

THERE IS NO TIME TO DELAY
…to wait and see…or to see if someone else will step up to the plate. It is time for US to roll up our sleeves and go to work. Right now momentum is working in our favor, but if gas prices retreat, the public will forget the pain, and our moment may be lost. How frightening to think that we could be looking back and apologizing to our children that we chose not to get this done when we had the chance.

PERSONAL ACTION OPTIONS
We need to do more than “preach to the choir”. Sharing ideas with each other is encouraging but that will not 1) increase our membership nor 2) influence public policy. If you know someone in the press or someone who blogs - get them to cover this. Write to your Congressman/woman. Ask those in the public eye to support this plan. Print downloadable flyers and put them in your car and/or business window.

YOU MAY FEEL INSIGNIFICANT
Individually, we each feel the same way, but together we will lay the foundation for a stronger, more prosperous and more secure America. Thanks again for joining us in this historical effort!
