In a nutshell, you got it right. It is easier to get folks to sign a petition. They understand petitions, it does not take a lot of effort, and it is immediate.
When I first joined the site in July, my husband and I sent a really nice letter to 1,800 of our personal and business contacts- only a dozen or so signed up. To this day, they see me and say, "I never got a chance to go look at that thing you sent me... what is it, and how is it going? "
YET, with petitions, I have been able to sign up over 500 since they came out in August. It is really simple. I say " I am collecting support for T Boone Pickens Plan to get us off foreign oil and onto American solutions"
EVERYONE wants to get off foreign oil. Very few in 4 months have said, they wanted to research it more or flat no. Most are eager to sign.
CAN you help? WE can not let this golden opportunity slip past. ALL IT TAKES IS NUMBERS.
Do we have the fortitude to fight this revolution? True change will only happen when the Congress realizes that it would be political suicide to ignore. THAT only happens with a huge ground swell of grass roots support and NUMBERS!

NO INFLUENCE WITHOUT NUMBERS
I have been able to gather hundreds with a simple sentence -
"I am collecting signatures of support for T. Boone PIckens plan to get us off of foreign oil and onto American solutions" then put the petition in front of them. EVERYONE wants to get off foreign oil, we just need to add them to our list!

The stars have aligned to create the possibility of a paradigm shift that is and has been urgently needed. We have an angry citizenry due to pain at the pump, a presidential election on the horizon, and a man with a plan to dramatically and imminently reduce our dependance on foreign oil, and provide a bridge to future solutions, who has the resources, contacts, knowledge, wealth and "will" to get it done.
Please share this plan with your circle of friends, family and associates. Urge them to JOIN. As you know, it is simply like signing a petition. With large numbers of supporters, we can put pressure to bear on Congress to incentivize alternative and renewable energies, and insure that our future president will be a leader that will push for domestic energy solutions. JFK once said. "in the next 10 years we will put a man on the moon". He got it done. We need that kind of leadership on energy.
Time is of the essence. If gas prices retreat the public will forget the pain, and our moment may be lost. How frightening to be looking back and apologizing to our children that we could not get this done when we had the chance.
