You mentioned 'poisoned wells'. Just a reminder to be sure that you have an RO system under your sink for drinking water and an activated carbon filter on your shower head. 'Small precaution, but big dividends for your health. Local water companies jump through hoops to distort water analyses - in to many ways to list here. If you have your own well, be absolutely sure that you have paid for - and have secured a broad-spectrum 'independent' water analyses (hard copy) to assure that your family is not ingesting toxins daily.

Before you contact Chrysler, and any large corporation, to present your idea, you need to secure a 'Patent Application' or at least a 'Provisional Patent'. If not, and anyone there see value in it, it's gone. You never want to be in a position to having to regress with legal suits to defend what was stolen. The Gold Rules and you loose.
Another tip might be to understand that large corporate entities do not accept your solicited idea, unless as a 'suggestion'. For a suggestion that is ultimately utilized, the maximum payment is usually set by internal 'policy' for reward in a range between $30 and $200 - no royalty - that's it. Any suggestion accepted includes all related 'intellectual property' of the idea, concept or invention. So be warned.
Above all, secure a 'non-disclosure, non-circumvention and use agreement' signed and witnessed.

When costs is factor, the most inexpensive way, doing much of the work yourself, may be to secure a 'Provisional Patent' for a cost of $200-400. Outfits like legal-zoom.com would be able to provide some guidance and the forms. Otherwise, contact and interview a few 'Patent Attorneys' for 'non-conflict of interests' and their specialties - they vary greatly. The ultimate costs of obtaining a full Patent issue may range between 12 and 25 Thousand Dollars (US) - so you may wish to first do market research to asses the demand and value solution of the invention, the customer profile, market size, and at what price will the market pay for this better 'solution'. When you really believe in the concept, then your 'hooked'. The only real reason for a Patent is if you plan to sell it to the highest bidder. If there is technical wizardry in the invention, then realize patent applications get published for world-wide exposure -- you may want to hold it proprietary. If it is a great 'gadget', then you may see it from China on your store shelves long before your patent is issued. If that is the outcome, then your only position is to 'defend your patent' (big bucks). These 'loop-holes' and exposure came about as part of the 'free trade' deals our stupid government made, namely the GAT treaty. Bringing the product to market (raising sufficient capital) died in the 1980's in favor of the equity and Real investment and pop swings of investment, such as the .com industry of the 1990's. The MBA teaching of the 1970's ushered in the corporate raiders of the 1980' and 1990's destroying many of our assets and leading to 'free market' consolidation (more of the same on a larger scale) where companies are swallowed into mega market monopolies of huge corporation. Now then, these huge entities will 'license' an invention and will only purchase the rights to an invention and intellectual properties when their monopolized market share is threatened by your invention. All of this is the result of out-of-control lobbyist for big money interest. Yes, this has left a huge 'hollow' to underpinning of our economy; available 'risk capital' for the private inventor. The private inventor is responsible for some 80% of all new jobs created over the last 150 years. Go figure. Just look at corruption we see currently in the financial institutions. Our politicians are simply owned and paid for by large corporations and special greedy, power hungry interests. This is of course, why my vote in November will be for an Independent Party and Candidate; just to send a message of 'no confidence' to our government, both parties and put Congress 'on notice' of loosing their jobs in two years (that will wake them up).
All said, I wish the best of luck with securing your patent, but be certain that you know 'why' (your plan) for the idea. If you have the capital, you may just want to manufacture, fill the warehouse and enter the market before someone does. Dominate. If you want to sell the idea to another entity, then you need to Patent first.
