- Thirty eight years ago, two friends of mine, both McGill University Engineers (very big deal up here) took advantage of a program for job creation/public service that one of our greatest Prime Ministers, Pierre Elliot Trudeau, had set up.
They designed, planned and built a methane generator on a farm successfully, making the farm totally self-sufficient in energy!!! They determined that any farm with 13 medium animals or the equivalent could do the same. A greater number of animals would mean extra energy. At that time, Electric companies had successfully lobbied governments to outlaw putting energy INTO the grid.......Such is not the case now. Farmers in Eastern Canada and northeastern US, especially dairy farmers, are reducing pollution (smell and E.Coli runoff etc) and producing enough electricity from burning methane (completely cleanly) to sell it back into the grid (albeit at a rip-off price). The end result of the process is completely clean and safe fertilizer. Since methane is many times more warming to the environment than CO2, and all those animals on farms will always be producing that poop on a regular basis, it is the most practical, elegant, non-noisy or unsitely method of producing vast amounts of energy. This process (anaerobic digestion) can be used with waste food oil, human sewage, plant waste, "landfills" - garbage and on and on. How has this been missed so consistenly by nearly all people and organizations fighting for clean energy????
