Response from Illinois Senator Dick Durbin
September 17, 2008
Dear Ms. DeVries:
Thank you for contacting me with your thoughts on the promotion of wind energy. I appreciate hearing from you and share your support for this alternative source of energy.
We have begun to recognize the real costs associated with our nation's dependence on oil. These costs are borne not only by the environment, but by Americans struggling to pay skyrocketing prices at the pump. We need a new direction in America's energy policy. We must cut our oil consumption and develop the alternative energy sources that have shown promise.
I strongly support the development and expansion of the wind industry. While wind power currently provides roughly one percent of our nation's electricity needs, it has the potential to account for a significantly larger portion of our domestic energy supply in the future.
To support the growth of the wind industry, I have worked to secure a long-term extension of the production tax credit (PTC) for electricity produced from renewable energy. The PTC, which provides a two-cents-per-kilowatt-hour benefit for the first 10 operating years of a renewable energy facility, is an important incentive for wind energy producers in Illinois and across the country. Along with encouraging the development of new wind power operations, the extension of the federal PTC is vital to the continued success of those companies already in operation.
I also have argued in favor of the implementation of a federal renewable electricity standard. A renewable electricity standard would require retail electric utilities to use renewable energy, such as wind power, to produce 15 percent of the power they generate by 2020. I will continue to work for this reform.
Our current energy problems have led many to call for the opening of new federal lands to oil and gas leasing. While I support safe and environmentally responsible oil production, I also recognize that an energy policy based primarily on drilling will not meet the needs of American consumers. Even long-time oil men, such as T. Boone Pickens, have acknowledged that America cannot drill its way out of this problem. Rather, the solution will be found in alternative and renewable forms of energy, including wind.
Thank you again for your message. Please feel free to keep in touch.
Sincerely,
Richard J. Durbin
United States Senator

The clock is ticking. Both Thomas Freidman and The Gang of 20 have told us (see DAILY PICKENS) the only way to change America's energy policy is to build this historical, grass roots effort to un-ignorable heights. There are less than 75 days until Inauguration Day. We must concentrate on the job at hand. CAN YOU GET 10 signed pledges faxed in asap? Many hands make light work.
PLEASE,
Kim

Are you able to help with pledges?

It has been a while since we kept in touch last!
We are now over 1.2 million suporters. We will need many more if we are to beat back the damn lobbyists and special interests. Can you help with the pledges? Every American needs to sign on. With pledges we can fan out and reach so many. It is an easy ask- Boone has done the hard work. I was able to get 300 signed in the first 4 days - everyone wants to to get off of foreign oil. We may never have a golden opportunity like this again!
ARE YOU IN?
Best
Kim
THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU ARE DOING!
I ran an alternative energy company back then and have had solar and alternative energy equipment at my home for 25 years. I also remodeled my home utilizing superinsulation and passive solar design back in the early 80's and have enjoyed the results. I actually do not consider Illinois a very good place for alternative ernergy (solar and wind) although we do have significant residential space-conditioning energy demand. The potential for local wind energy and solar energy applications here in Illinois is somewhat limited due to poor economic viability, even with significant tax credits.
I sold the energy business in 1984 and have worked with computers and telecommunications since then.
Thanks for your interest in the Windspire. I am traveling today and on the go, so I will ask you to Join our Pickens site:

Aloha,

I am in projects of distribution and marketing, selling and manufacturing small grid-tie turbines, kits and systems from 5kw to 100kw but biggest demand is 10 and 20kw where a system can actually take a homeowner or farm to energy independance. Small Wind Turbines for Farm & Ranch
