Profile Information

Are you interested in becoming an organizer in your area?
Yes
Tell us about your experience with alternative energy:
I bought my Prius in July, 2001. The windmill on my family farm in Iowa was trashed in the 50s by a tornado. Our western boundary is Haywood Gap in the Newfound mountain range of the Smokies, at the Haywood Co./Buncombe Co. line. It'd be a great place for a windmill.
What excites you about this campaign?
I like reducing our environmental pollution and not being held hostage to foreign oil. I want to make alternative energy work in this country.
What do you want to do to help?
What are the options?

No I didn't catch the the two articles you mentioned. I know how over protective some people are about the beauty of these mountains. And from David Gantt's point of view, I'm sure it's the politically correct thing to do. I have heard of the App State windmills (they're big into PV too) and from what I've heard so far it's been marginally successfull. Wind doesn't blow in this part of the country consistantly enough to make a big impact so it seems. Anyway the good news is technological advances are coming up with better, more efficient, less obtrusive windmills that blend into the landscape. And they have developed site specific home and building windmill systems that can offset a portion of their electrical needs. To me, it's all a matter of perspective and attitude. Some think telephone poles are ugly, and they are, but we get used to them if we want the conveniences in life they bring us. It's so good to hear from you again.

Hi Susan, I checked out the press release on the Noble Environmental Power website. It apprears Noble's contractor had a collapse of a turbine and a small fire resulting - no injuries. Noble is apparently doing numerous projects in NY State with wind turbines, big ones. Altona's windpark is slated to have 65 GE 1.5 megawatt wind turbines. They said there will be an investigation into the mishap. The wind must blow pretty hard up there to knock down one of those windmills. Great location, poorly designed (or constructed) support structures, I'd say (that's a guess). They didn't say this happened during construction or after. Anyway, it appears to be an anomaly and nobody got hurt - thank god. Hope they had good insurance. I enjoyed the website, interesting FAQs. Thanks for the heads up. Keep me informed if they find out the cause.

Hi Susan, most electrical losses are actually at the generating plant. We rely primarily on natural gas and coal as sources which are very inefficient from the beginning. However, our current electrical generating systems have gotten better over the last decade by recycling waste heat back into the process or by improving the process using more efficient generating equipment. Unfortunately, the utilty industry have found it to be very difficult to upgrade these generating plants to more efficient ones because of public resistance to new coal-fired plants with better processes and efficiencies and natural gas because of limited supplies. Our current fossil fuel based systems are 40-50yrs behind the technology and it costs mega bucks to replace them. That's why, in my opinion, solar and wind "seem" like a better choice in my mind because it moves the industry in a new direction with technologies that cost less to operate, produce less pollution, and lessen our dependance on fossil fuels. Don't misunderstand me, wind and solar, have a ways to go with enormous generating inefficiencies and reliability issues and, in addition, any distribution systems beyond the generating plant will need to be upgraded to truly make a difference in system's overall efficiency. The long and the short of it is wind and solar are inherrently clean and relatively reliable compared to what we have now and that's worth the extra expense in my mind. The basic problem with wind and solar is they are best generated in the mid and south west regions of the country and generation plants need to concentrated in those areas again for efficiency sake. My bottom line is wind and solar technologies are continuously improving and we can at least start with replacing (or supplementing) our current fossil fuel based systems with something new and with the ability to be upgraded with least amount of public resistance (hopefully) far into the future.

Well said. I listened to McCain yesterday on "Face the Nation with Bob Scheifer". McCain's bitter. He admits it's politics as usual and payback time for the Democrats for what the Republicans did to them while they were in power. Pelosi and Reid haven't helped matters and probably caused a backlash with their "we won, it's our turn" rhetoric. Politicians from both parties need to grow up, face realty, and come up with a compromise. I say -tax cuts/spending 50/50 and large enough this time to do the trick. Let's get on with healing the economy and restoring confidence.

Thank you for your nice note, Susan. Please forward it to your governor's office. Every time I see something that is being done to put a state at the top of the renewabel energy game, I forward it to all my representatives to see.
They don't like being shown up.

Hope you have a great day!

Best
Kim

Let's make this 50,000 Wednesday!

We have sent over 30,000 messages to our Senators in just 2 days. THIS IS THE MOMENT WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR. Real action is on the table. Let them hear from us.

Boone's team has made it so easy - it takes just one minute to forward a simple message to your Senators. PLEASE do it today. Please get the folks in your home, family and office to do the same.

Here is the easy link to our Senators:

Hi Susan, glad you asked. I ddn't know where it was the first time either. Dripolator Coffee House is across the road from Wild Wings on Biltmore Ave near downtown Asheville. There's only 14 parking spaces and sometimes it gets a little busy. Towing is enforced. The next best place to park is the ABC store one block away. I'm up for suggestions on a new place to meet. We can discuss that too at the next meeting.

Hi Susan, Welcome aboard! This is Dale Reynolds, NC-11 District Leader. I'm so happy and encouraged by the enthusiasm being generated here in this District. People really do want our current energy policies to change for a better fmore secure future for our children. We have put together a couple of meetings so far at Dripolators, next one is planned for Feb 2 at 6PM, a week from today. If you can come that would be great! Hope to see you there.

If there's anything I can do for you, let me know.

Susan,

Welcome and THANK YOU for joining Pickens Plan. Here is how you can help.

EMAIL A LETTER TO YOUR REPRESENTATIVES BY USING OUR EASY RED "CONTACT CONGRESS" BUTTON -This is urgent, because the Energy Bill in Congress is in danger of not passing! With little effort, we have the ability here for you to send a letter to our Representatives in Washington and Governor, too. Go to THE PLEDGE (at the very top of this page on the blue header) On the top of the pledge page there are three rectangular buttons- two blue ones and ONE RED BUTTON, that reads "CONTACT CONGRESS" . Fill in the short, standard form. Done!

YOU CAN ALSO HELP BY BRINGING 5 FOLKS TO JOIN the site today, so that we can build a voice big enough that Congress will finally have to listen to us, instead of the lobbyists and special interests, who are trying to derail this historic effort.

YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THE PLEDGE on the main page. Print out 10 or more of them, get them signed and fax them back to Boone ASAP. This is how we build our numbers fast! Be a leader, be a part of the "100 CLUB", by faxing in 100 signed pledges. Let me know when you are done and I will add you to the list.

THERE IS NO TIME TO DELAY
…to wait and see…or to see if someone else will step up to the plate. It is time for US to roll up our sleeves and go to work. Right now momentum is working in our favor, but if gas prices retreat, the public will forget the pain, and our moment may be lost.

FOR MORE INFORMATION
Check out Pickens "August Call to Action"- for a course of action! Here is an informative video "Topeka, Kansas Town Hall Meeting": http://www.pickensplan.com/news/2008/08/04/video-of-the-topeka-town...

PERSONAL ACTION OPTIONSWe need to do more than “preach to the choir”. Sharing ideas with each other is encouraging but that will not 1) increase our membership nor 2) influence public policy. If you know someone in the press or someone who blogs - get them to cover this. Ask those in the public eye to support this plan.

A GROUP FOR EVERYONE. Join the Guides and Materials for New Members Group. Lot's of good information there.
Check out the many groups for Solar, CNG, your area, etc. Connect, learn and share. We grow stronger with your input. If you don't see a group that speaks to your interest, then start a group of your own.

PLEASE FRIEND ME so we can keep in touch.

Thanks again for joining this historical effort. WE CAN DO THIS .
