I'm very happy to hear you're sold on Timber Frame/SIP homes. I love building them and will provide whatever info I can to assist your project. Definitely join the Timber Framers Guild. The small membership fee ($100.00) is totally worth the price of admission. You'll be linked to 1495, like minded and generous members. They do community based projects all over the country which you can participate in at any or NO level of experience to contribute skills or learn them.
They do workshops in joinery as well as educational seminars and conferences. The next one will be the West Coast Conference in Sun River, Oregon this Month. Take a look, but first send in your membership online and say hello to Joel McCarty & Will Beemer, Executive Directors. Tell them I sent you over. They'll take good care of you.
To answer your question about the efficiency of the raising process…the average pre-joined (2500-3000SF) Timber Frame can be assembled and raised on site in 2-4 days depending on the complexity of the frame, available equipment (crane, forklift, etc) and experience of the crew. The SIP panels will take an additional 7 to 10 days based on the same criteria. So in roughly 14 days you have a closed in building ready for roofing, siding, windows, etc. The durability, energy efficiency and beauty of these homes is off the charts in any comparison to conventional stick frame. They’re different animals.

This year I have helped so many members learn about personal home energy plans. It's all about power use, conservation, and home power generation, things I have been doing at my residence to lower my energy costs. BTW, Michigan: I just posted an article on my page about Home Wind Systems in Michigan. Your state's representatives, governor, and public utility commission officials are not in your corner with this "soft policy" on Net Metering. Instead they have the tables turned against green power for businesses and homeowners. You should read that article, important.

Thank you for joining! Where do we start? For a wealth of information, we can look to Europe as our model for developing sustainable renewable energy. Countries like Denmark and Germany lead the way in this effort and have been there for the past 10-20 years - even more. Germany’s commitment through cooperatives and local municipalities has installed 19,000+ wind turbines and millions of solar collectors, both for solar hot water and electricity.
The onshore and offshore installation of wind turbines in Denmark is producing 20% of all their electrical needs. (Please see examples in the photos on my page).
I mention these examples to give us a direction for inspiration and point to where we could be heading with the Pickens Plan. The technology is already there and we do not have to reinvent the wheel. If we can not get critical numbers how can we take advantage of this golden opportunity? High gas prices have "woken up" America to our plight and a paradigm shift like not other is in the wind. We need to do this now.
So many new members write "I want to help, what can I do?" This is a start. We may not get to the next step if we can not get this one done.
Our leaders can not ignore millions of members of the Pickens Plan. We are not there yet. One person can make a difference.

- Tell us about your experience with alternative energy:
- I want to intall solar PV panels and a wind turbine when I build my home in the Upper Pennisula. Also will be building a solar kiln to dry wood. We have been reading quite a bit about alternative energy for the last 5 years, and am concerned about our dependance on foreign oil.
- What excites you about this campaign?
- That I know that this can happen, people will have to adjust their lifestyles somewhat, but it can happen.
- What do you want to do to help?
- By getting involved with community projects, by constructing working models. I drive past the 2 wind turbines when I cross the Mackinaw bridge, going to our property in the upper, and wonder why Michigan has not built more of these? With my background as a journeyman carpenter, and metal fabricator/welder, I am anxious to learn and construct, wind turbine towers, and solar PV arrays.

Can Wind Turbines installed on the roof of a residential home damage its structure?
I have heard that the vibrations caused from a home wind turbine mounted on a rooftop of an average residential home can cause structual damage ? Has anyone had any problems with this? Should a wind turbine be mounted on a steel tower designed for this application, and would it benifit the homeowner to have the turbine higher in the air for better air currents?
