South Carolinian seeks others for a little crusade to make the world a better place

Greetings--

I'd like to encourage anyone with interest in seeing the type of bold action Mr Pickens is talking about (especially from SC) to contact me here, and let's develop plans to press elected officials, commissioners, etc for as much support as possible.

We need a groundswell of support, in every city and town across the country, that can't be ignored, to begin to finally get this country on a more rational energy footing--if for no other reason than national security.

Companies are stepping up their environmental initiatives, and that may mean a boom in "green-collar" jobs.

A recent forecast by the American Solar Energy Society found that renewable energy and energy-efficient industries were responsible for the creation of nearly 8.5 million jobs in 2006, and by 2030 that number is expected to reach 40 million.

Colleges and universities are taking notice, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc., a job placement consulting group.

Many have introduced specialized degree programs in eco-commerce, environmental accounting, green and social marketing, and ecological economics.

"The demand for 'green-collar' jobs is really exploding, especially as the cost of energy continues to climb," said John Challenger, the group's chief executive. "Students need to start thinking about developing skills that will give them an edge for these types of careers that did not even exist until recently."

Popular jobs include urban planners, forestry professionals and environmental lawyers, Challenger said. There is also a growing demand for architects and engineers with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit.

Both GM and Ford still build vehicles compatible with the kits but the purchaser, usually a Government agency, has to have it converted after market. My husband says GM is building bi-fuel cars to sell in other countries but doesn't market them here. I hope that changes. I have heard the conversions cost between $8,000 and $10,000. The Fed gives a 50% tax credit and Oklahoma gives a 50% tax credit but I think Oklahoma's is 50% of the remaining cost which would leave us only paying 25% for the conversion. We'd have to come up with the money up front though. We have natural gas at home and can purchase and install a CNG appliance but they are expensive and we have a fill site 8 miles south in Mustang, OK. With the additional fill sites Chesapeake is rumoured to be putting in, we may not need one anyway. We're going to wait and see. Otherwise, the appliance would cost about $5,000 installed. If we buy one new, we would get the same tax credits as on the conversion. Wish we'd bought another one. We could have had a second one for $5995 a year ago but the same vehicle now would cost us $13,500. We paid $10,000 for ours but, again, it only had 4,000 miles on it so it was just like a new car. We had it appraised a couple of weeks ago for insurance purposes and it has appreciated in value -- it's now worth $10,300 -- The appraiser thinks it will continue to appreciate.

We have to drown out the foreign oil Lobbyists in Washington. Collectively We have to become the VOICE for changing our reliance on foreign oil, by Vocalizing our Support for the wide scale use of Alternative Energy Producing Systems.
