Maybe--But Not Sure What to Organize
Tell us about your experience with alternative energy:
I immigrated to the great US of A from a third world country, the Dominican Republic. A very large percentage of the vehicles on the road there run on natural gas after installing a conversion kit that costs about $700 US dollars. It is a very safe yet relatively simple kit that allows normal gas burning internal combustion engines to run on either of the two fuels automatically or manually with a simple flip of a switch.
Two years ago my father installed this kit on his 2002 V6 Montero Sport SUV. It consists of a tank that can be mounted in the spare tire well, delivery lines, a gage and sensors. The engine first runs on gasoline for the first few minutes until it warms up. The system automatically and seamlessly switches over to natural gas once it reaches optimum operating temperature an now runs on a fuel that costs him a third of the price of a gallon of gas. If, for example, he travels outside of an area that fill-up stations are not available, a flip of a dash mounted switch cuts over to burning gasoline.
If a technologically deficient country can apply these types of techniques, imagine what we can do in the US. This is a solution that can be installed in your existing SUV, minivan or sedan literally overnight without having to buy a new hybrid import, sacrificing choice or the comfort and driving experience we are accustomed to. However, just like with any good idea, I would expect the do nothing left would find a million reasons to why we couldn’t employ this type of a solution.
What excites you about this campaign?
I’m not a greenie or a global warming theorist. I’m simply among the struggling American middle class that have seen and felt first-hand how a $4 gallon of gas can impact your livelihood and attaining the American Dream. In the last few months I have come to the realization that our economy is vulnerable to a devastating blow if those who wish us harm simply close the spigot. After 9/11, national security should be our number one priority. No matter how green our planet is, how good our healthcare or education, nothing is as important as being alive to be able to enjoy them. I do not want be at the mercy of the Middle East or potentially not acting against the threats of their nuclear ambitions because we are afraid of an oil supply shortage.
The strength and wealth of our great country has been created partly on oil and I suspect oil will continue to play a major role in our lives for decades to come. Diversifying our energy sources will send the clear message to the oil producing nations that they would no longer have such leverage over our policies, drive prices down and heal our economy.
I drive a 2007 V8 Corvette on my daily 103 mile roundtrip commute, by choice. I get a great deal of satisfaction and enjoyment, something I will never get in a Prius. This is a country of great freedoms and the ability to make choices. I do not want to be forced into driving a turtle or riding a bicycle to work. I want to live in an America that is safe, free and prosperous, not China.
