But given a huge supply of reserves, what will be the outcome of getting more of those reserves to the surface? As you stated, more usable supply will drive the cost down. Second, an increasing demand will reduce the reserve supply for future generations.
We have a sufficient supply of natural gas and smaller companies are drilling for natural gas when the price of gas will support the cost of drilling. I grew up in west Texas and am very familiar with smaller oil and gas producers and their operations. They are more than willing to, and some do currently, drill for natural gas. However the price of natural gas on the surface (or at the wellhead, as the industry puts it) is the key. When there is a large supply, the price will be decrease and, therefore, the time required to recover the cost of drilling will be longer. Most smaller producers cannot allow the payout of their drilling programs to stretch out very long. They depend on higher gas prices to effect a payout sooner. The economics of the future of a well is what determines the willingness of a smaller producer to begin a drilling project. Knowing, as they do, that the price will drop when supply increases doesn't give them warm fuzzy feelings. The larger producers can weather the extended payout due to their deeper pockets. So to keep the smaller producers out of the market, they are better off helping the price to drop such that the smaller producer cannot play the game.
You are right that NG conversion packages are available. In fact, I worked for a company that manufactured just those conversion packages. But, when applied to a diesel engine, the resultant horse power is less than the diesel fueled engine, so the truck's performance is not as good as it was with diesel. Because of that, truck operators, by and large, are not ready to jump on the conversion band wagon. However, an engine designed for NG from the ground up can provide the performance but with the higher development costs. Boone is keenly aware of these issues as he invested in NGV conversions, himself, a while back. As a natural gas producer, his company felt it was in their best interest to assist an NG conversion manufacturer. Boone became aware of the issues involved intimately and therefore, realizes that a new, increased performance, engine will go over better with the fleet operators than a converted engine will.
Bit regardless what you and I think would be best for the country, we, as practical men, must be willing to find ways such that all the players in the market can avoid losing too much money and hope very soon to make a profit with the changes we propose. If we don't, we'll stymie the best efforts we can generate.
I read your comment on the appearance of Boone on The VIEW. I can understand your reasoning for thinking Boone has changed his stance. However, I think you've missed something he has said from the get go with the PickensPlan. That is, that there has to be a release of natural gas, currently used for power generation, in order to redirect that natural gas to transportation needs.
If you will go look at the first video he released last year, you'll see he used a pie chart to show the amount of the various types of fuel used in electrical power generation in the US currently. He went on to say that 22% of our electricity was produced by burning natural gas to make steam to turn the turbines that rotate the generators. He called for the replacement of that 22% natural gas by wind and solar power.
We have plenty of natural gas reserves, yes, but the key is what the word reserves means in this case. Reserves means that the gas is still under ground but we know where it is and approximately how much is there. However, using our current production capacity, we cannot power the transportation fleet AND generate the electricity we currently demand, at the same time. That would involve stepping up natural gas production to a rate that would require too long to complete and deplete our resources too quickly..
Therefore, Boone has, from the start, said we needed to use the wind and solar power to release the 22% of the currently produced natural gas from it's present use as power generation fuel so it can be used as a transportation fuel for OTR trucking and bus fleets.
He has not, as you fear, changed his course. It's just a matter of the order that it must all happen. There is great support in our country for clean energy right now, so he's taking advantage for that momentum to get the power grid upgraded and get new electrical energy sources online. Meanwhile, he'll be working on getting the natural gas production redirected to the fleet industry.
Of course, there is a lot to be developed there as well. Truck engine manufacturers must retool to build new NG powered truck engines while still producing all the necessary parts for the millions of diesel engines now in service. As Boone said, he's not in favor of making a sudden change, but rather, to replace the older fleet with NG powered trucks and buses as the older equipment is withdrawn from service..
We'll have to show Congress there is a benefit to providing tax incentives to the various industries who must invest capital to build out the necessary fueling stations and storage facilities along our highways, in addition to the connecting pipelines that will deliver fuel to the refueling points.
And all that is in addition to the manufacturing segments job of producing the necessary natural gas truck and bus engines. It's a major task, but it doable. Everything in it's time and in the proper order.
But rest assured that Boone is still on track with his original goal. Sure, he'll likely benefit monetarily from the use of natural gas for a transportation fuel, somewhat, but he doesn't need the money He's 80 years old. He couldn't spend the money he has before he died if he quit making anymore today. His purpose is to get the US our of a bind as a result of us depending on foreign oil imports way too heavily.
I know this has been long but I hope you see that Boone really does have our interest at heart and isn't just another greedy oil tycoon.
