WORKSHOP ON THE CONSEQUENCES OF GLOBAL WARMING AND RISE OF SEA LEVEL
2007
“Most of the observed increase in globally averaged temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations.”
2001
“There is new and stronger evidence that most of the warming observed over the last 50 years is attributable to human activities.”
1995
“The balance of evidence suggests a discernable human influence on global climate.”
1990
“The unequivocal detection of the enhanced greenhouse effect from observations is not likely for a decade or more.”

An overview of Fair Trade Coffee and how it can make a difference.Supporting Cocoa Farmer Groups and Cooperatives
One of the greatest challenges for cocoa farmers around the world is how to establish successful farmer organizations. In Cote d’Ivoire, the largest cocoa producer in the world, less than 15 percent of the country’s cocoa farmers belong to cooperatives (according to some recent estimates). The advantages from a well-organized farmer group or coop, is that it can enable farmers to:
* pool their resources and bargaining power in the marketplace
* provide services to its members such as input supplies (fertilizers, improved planting material, etc) and farmer training
* time sales and sell in bulk in order to capture higher prices
* share learnings on crop diversification, so that farmers are not so reliant on a single cash crop
* establish governance structures and processes that empower local communities
In a recent trip to Cote d’Ivoire, I visited the Camene Cooperative in Tiassale. Camene has some 2,000 members. As a service to its members, the cooperative provides discount prices on inputs, farm
credit, and improved access to transportation. Through farmer field schools, they also learn about child labor prevention, integrated crop management, health care, farm safety and other important topics.
What excites you about this campaign?

What would happen if all the ice in the world melted?
Imagine a world where melting ice caps have raised sea levels by 20 feet, where the floods and storms inundate large areas of the world's low lying coastlines, where the cities are under water. Is this the fate that awaits mankind? It is a nightmare scenario - but what is the scientific basis for these fears of sea-level rise? Sea-level rise is nothing new as during the earth's 4 billion year history the poles have repeatedly frozen and melted, raising and lowering sea level. But something is wrong; sea level rise is accelerating. The source of the problem lies in the sheets of ice that cover the land around both poles. They are melting faster than ever before and it looks like man is the cause. We travel the globe to discover why sea levels are rising.
WATER FOR LIFE
the Environmental Change and Security Program describes how water quality and quantity are declining in many parts of the world, posing acute problems for communities and governments. This crisis, along with high levels of interdependence on shared water resources, has led many members of the news media and some politicians to warn of imminent “water wars” between countries. Yet such wars between nations over water have never occurred in modern history and are unlikely to take place in the future. Although tensions over water resources often lead countries to trade hostile words, such exchanges rarely escalate into full-fledged conflicts.
Weri is fighting against the lack of appropriate structures required for the survival of populations in third-world or war-ridden regions. Assessments focusing on the improvement of the sanitary conditions that were performed eventually enabled people to access drinking water points, decontamination and electrical power. Good morning. I see you've joined the PICKENS ON THE MOVE Group. That was a beautiful picture you posted. It led me to your website. You are very active in a wide range of lifesaving projects. I live in Michigan, surrounded by the Great Lakes of the United States and, even we, have problems with our water-quality. Happily, there is no shortage here.
Look at these houses, I have just done a very green and efficient building for a friend Indian D***, yes the same Indian D*** from A builders tale... see Indian D*** chapter www.jmatsonheininger.com soon I will have these posted on the architectures site. And remember
Tskhinvali, South Ossetia - In a speech before the United Nations last month, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili implored world leaders to set up an international investigation to find out the truth about the war in South Ossetia.
I couldn't agree more. But I think the results of an honest investigation would reveal a very different "truth" than what President Saakashvili claims.
I know this because I was in Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossetia, on Aug. 7 when Georgian troops marched into the city and killed my friends and neighbors. I huddled with my family in terror for three nights while Saakashvili's tanks and rockets destroyed hundreds of our homes, desecrated cemeteries, gutted schools and hospitals.
I also have good reason not to trust what Saakashvili says. For three days before the attack I had been getting calls from many Georgian friends warning me to get out. They said Saakashvili was planning an attack. Most of the Georgians living in South Ossetia left because they knew what was coming.
On the night of Aug. 7, Saakashvili went on television and assured the frightened civilian population of South Ossetia that he would not attack us. This was long after the time Saakashvili now claims Russians had begun "invading" Georgia.
Ossetians went to bed relieved and thankful for a peaceful night.
Less than two hours later, according to credible international accounts, his artillery, bombers, and three brigades of ground troops unleashed what I can only describe as a fierce hell on our city. In the moment, we knew only our fear as we hid. Afterward I spoke with hundreds of Ossetians to find out what was done to us.
My friend's elderly father tried to douse the flames set by Georgian fire on the home he had built with his hands. His leg was severed by shrapnel from Georgian weapons. He bled to death while his disabled wife crawled from their burning home.
Ossetians saw Georgian tanks firing into basements where women and children hid for safety They saw fleeing families shot down by Georgian snipers. We learned that the Georgian military had used Grad rocket systems and cluster bombs against Tskhinvali.
Yes, I would very much like to see an international commission investigate the truth of what happened.
When I came out from hiding, thanking God that the Russians had saved our lives, I was dismayed by the reaction of the international media to what had happened. There was nothing about Ossetian deaths and the unprovoked horrors inflicted by Saakashvili's military. It made my heart sick.
The truth has been crushed by Georgia's powerful public relations machine as mercilessly as Georgian tanks rolled over the defenseless civilians of Tskhinvali.
I know that Americans are a generous and fair people. But Americans haven't been told the truth about what happened to us. Americans don't understand that Ossetians are an independent, Christian Orthodox people with a deep history in our land. The world talks only about Georgian freedom. What of freedom for my people? Does our suffering, do our voices, mean nothing?
I don't blame the Georgian people for what happened to us. The vast number of Ossetians and Georgians want to live in peace. I blame Georgia's leaders.
Saakashvili has persuaded the world that he is a "beacon" of democracy and openness. But he won't even tell his own people the truth. My Georgian friends weren't allowed to see any Russian news sites during the conflict because all of those sites were blocked by Saakashvili's government.
I know we are a small people, and I make no claim to understanding the experts in geopolitics with their theories and pronouncements about the great powers. But I have fought for women's rights in Ossetia for 12 years and I believe in the truth.
In a recent article, Saakashvili cynically dismissed Ossetian suffering and deaths because, he said, Russia had "lied" about how many of my people were killed by the Georgian military.
It breaks my heart to even engage in this discussion. No one – including Saakashvili – knows how many Ossetians were killed by his Army. I have friends who buried loved ones in their backyards because there were no alternatives. Many people are still missing.
Does Saakashvili believe his vicious attack on a civilian city was justified if he only killed a few hundred rather than a few thousand? Do Americans realize that a military trained and equipped by the US government attacked a civilian population as they slept in their beds? Can they justify sending another billion dollars to Georgia and nothing for those Georgia attacked?
I have made an urgent appeal to the world for humanitarian relief for our people at the website helpossetianow.org. I beg the United States and the world to find out the truth. Please hear our voices.

Walking down Rue des Plantes with my father and son on a sunny morning in Paris was an experience made more surreal by the clacking cadence of my father's cane. My father has always been a man that walks with determination that results in a pace that requires a boy to jog. On occasion, I would be that boy jogging with my brother to keep up with my fathers pace towards the Frankfurt Auto Show. Now, the three generations of Schneider's took a leisurely 15 minute stroll down the street to catch the tram. We paid a few Eurodollars to obtain tickets from an automated machine near the tram station and were soon whisked off to the Paris Auto Exposition.
Upon our arrival, we used the official magazine of the exposition to determine which buildings housed the special reasons that we were making this journey. First, we located the facilities that housed the Honda Clarity – hydrogen powered fuel cell, the all-new Honda Insight Hybrid and the Honda CR-Z Hybrid prototype. The crowds reminded me of the efforts we would make to get a glimpse of the new offerings at the Frankfurt Auto Show. This time it was my opportunity to encourage my son to take advantage of a crease in the crowd to wedge our way to a full picture opportunity along with my father.
Surprisingly, the next special reason for this journey was in a neighboring booth where we spent time with the Aixam MEGA, City, Roadline, Crossline and Scouty. The Aixam MEGA is available as a diesel or full electric vehicle in Europe and the cab and chassis are imported to America where Columbia ParCar electrifies and completes the glider as a Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV) in Reedsburg, Wisconsin. My understanding of the Aixam complete line up was supplemented by a couple additional electric vehicle manufactures that were represented in this hall. Mitsubishi was offering a test drive of their prototype – MiEV and the three of us experienced it with a host as I got to drive it. Since I have been driving a full electric Columbia Summit or MEGA for nearly two years, it was not as surreal as it would have been for most. But it was an experience that I was grateful for, none the less.
My father has been associated with Volkswagen since 1954 and that was the main reason for our having visited the Frankfurt Auto Show in the past.
So it was our next stop in Paris. The model of particular interest for me was Volkswagen’s Blue Motion Diesel. It is a new engine that uses low sulfur diesel and therefore will be made available in America. Honda has made a similar announcement and we did get information as well as the opportunity to see the four models that they offer the clean diesel option. Mercedes Benz was also showing their Blue Hybrid in the exposition. We were intrigued by the Nissan Solar concept but disappointed that the Nissan Cube Electric was not shown.
All in all, the show was beyond expectations and the journey back to the hotel included the walk past a restaurant that we choose that evening. And the clack of my father’s cane sounded the determination in his walk to enjoy genuine French Cuisine.
This is a general overview of the Paris Auto Exposition and more detailed experiences will follow-so stay tuned!
