This is an example of why I think we need to create a new power grid and not just upgrade the old one. We need to remove the possibility of these events repeating. Take the power cables underground like many big cities have already done, and protect them from such weather events that down pole and power lines.

Markey Chairman of the select committee on energy Independence and Global warming challenged the executives to pledge to invest 10 percent of their profits to develop renewable energy and give up $18 billion in tax breaks over 10 years so money could be funneled to support other energy and conservation. The executives said the companies already are spending billions of dollars - more than $3.5 billion over the last five years - on renewable fuels such as wind energy and biodiesel, but rejected… Continue

Solar energy systems have been exempt from Florida's sales and use tax since July 1, 1997. The term "solar energy system" means the equipment and requisite hardware that provide and are used for collecting, transferring, converting, storing or using incidental solar energy for water heating, space heating and cooling, or other applications that would otherwise require the use of a conventional source of energy such as petroleum products, natural gas, manufactured gas or electricity. Vendors… Continue

In June 2006, a renewable energy production tax credit was established in Florida (SB 888) to encourage the development and expansion of renewable energy facilities in the state. This annual corporate tax credit is equal to $0.01/kWh of electricity produced and sold by the taxpayer to an unrelated party during a given tax year. For new facilities (placed in service after May 1, 2006) the credit is based on the sale of the facility's entire electrical production. For an expanded*… Continue

Lakeland Electric, a municipal utility in Florida, is the nation's first utility to offer solar-heated domestic hot water on a "pay-for-energy" basis. The utility owns and maintains the solar water heaters they install on participating customers' homes and bills them only for hot water delivered to the faucet. The utility installs revenue-grade energy…

In June 2008, Florida enacted legislation that revived a renewable energy property tax exemption that had previously expired in 1990. Under Florida law, improved real property upon which a renewable energy source device* is installed and operated is entitled to an exemption in the amount of the original cost of the device, including the installation cost. The exemption does not include the cost of replacing, removing or improving existing property in the course of the… Continue

Nice work here on Independence Bonds.
I am interested in the PowerSave Product you mention. Here is a e-mail I just sent my electric company:
I have run across advertising for a product called "Power-Save 1200." It cost about $300 and the makers claim it might reduce you electric bill by about 25 percent.
It sounds too good to be true. I am not an electrical engineeer and do not know how to evaluate thier claims.
Is this a product I should… Continue

In my opinion, President Obama extended an olive branch to Rebublicans this week, and so did the Democrats, by putting billions of dollars worth of tax cuts into the Stimulus Package. Never mind that most economist said tax cuts go into savings or paying off debt instead of into the economy. Yet, because of (pork? spending?) every single Republican in the House voted NO. Why? To prove a point on this first major vote of the Obama Administration - where he actually went to them and listened? Did… Continue

DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - Energy leaders at the World Economic Forum debated the true cost of fuel on Thursday as they grappled with the implications of world recession and how to navigate out of it.
Record-high oil prices close to $150 a barrel in July last year added to the pain of economic slowdown, and now much cheaper prices of near $40 a barrel could help the global economy to rally.
But for consumers, producers and the planet, oil at… Continue

Boone has asked us all to work to get President Obama's stimulus package passed. There are a lot of things that we can do at the local level. I know that President Obama will be relying on his own grassroots network to be doing the same thing so I thought his network might be a good place to look for allies in the effort.
I realize that our members have a wide range of political affiliations but in this instance we are promoting a common agenda. If you would like to explore… Continue
