Time for a Different Fuel

Switching to natural gas would help the environment and boost energy independence

By T. Boone Pickens

October 16, 2009

Since the surge of passenger cars following the establishment of the Interstate Highway System in 1956, America has been addicted to foreign oil.

We are now importing nearly two-thirds of the oil we require, and about 70 percent of that is used to power America's fleet of cars, light trucks and 18-wheelers.

According to the U.S.… Continue

Saudis Ask for Aid if World Cuts Dependence on Oil

Army,

See, the Saudis know we mean business!

Associated Press

BANGKOK — There are plenty of needy countries at the U.N. climate talks in Bangkok that make the case they need financial assistance to adapt to the impacts of global warming. Then there are the Saudis.

Saudi Arabia has led a quiet campaign during these and other negotiations — demanding behind closed doors that oil-producing nations get special financial… Continue

Break the Curse of Oil Addiction

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

When T. Boone Pickens framed U.S. energy dependence on foreign oil as a national security issue, people couldn't agree fast enough. He launched an aggressive advertising campaign pushing wind and solar power as an alternative to imported oil in 2008.

With gasoline prices hovering at $4 a gallon and driving up the cost of anything that had to be shipped, plus the skyrocketing cost of fuel oil causing utility bill spikes, Pickens' message… Continue

We Spent $25.2 Billion on Foreign Oil in August – Not Acceptable

August may be vacation time for many people, but our reliance on foreign oil didn’t take any time off.

In August alone we imported 355 million barrels of oil and sent $25.2 billion overseas – the most spent on foreign oil out of any month this year.

We are digging ourselves deeper into a h*** every day and our economy and security are suffering.

OPEC to Hold Quota After Oil Reaches $75 Saudi Target

Sept. 7 (Bloomberg) -- OPEC’s success in more than doubling oil prices since a five-year low in December will probably persuade ministers to maintain production quotas after this week’s meeting.

Reducing shipments beyond record cutbacks last year would endanger the global economic recovery, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries’ president said last week. Oil rose to $75 a barrel on Aug. 25, the price Saudi Arabian King Abdullah says is fair for consumers and… Continue

Oil Spin

BY MATTHEW R. SIMMONS

FOREIGNPOLICY.COM

SEPTEMBER 4, 2009

Last week, four of the world's most outspoken oil aficionados waded into the controversy of peak oil, publishing articles packed with myth and distortion. This "Gang of Four" all claimed the issue was silly, moot, or simply a myth. The four pieces were Pulitzer Prize-winning author Daniel Yergin's seven-page article in Foreign Policy, energy analyst Michael Lynch's… Continue
