Surge in Natural Gas Has Utah Driving Cheaply
According to a recent story in The New York Times people in Utah have embraced their supply of natural gas as a vehicle fuel and are filling up on CNG for as little as .87 a gallon (as of last fall). Where is our state at in relation to this?
Pennsylvania is a prime example of states who are missing the ball on CNG. We have huge deposits of natural gas within our borders and in a short time we could have municipal fleets and local/regional t…

Gov. Schwarzenegger Celebrates Opening of World’s Largest Landfill Gas to Liquefied Natural Gas Facility in California
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today celebrated the opening of the world’s largest landfill gas to liquefied natural gas (LFG-to-LNG) facility in California, the Waste Management Altamont Landfill and Resource Recovery Facility in Livermore. The plant, put together by partners Waste Management, Linde-BOC and Gas Technology Institute, is designed to produce up…

10 Questions for T. Boone Pickens
Do you envision an energy plan that will eventually lead to the U.S. no longer being dependent on fossil fuels? Paul Frost, IONIA, MICH.
That'll be a long time off. What I envision is we're going to have to use every resource we have. I want to get off of foreign oil. When I say off foreign oil, I'm O.K. with Canadian oil. I'm O.K. wit…

It costs $400 per gallon to transport fuel to remote combat locations in Afghanistan.

The U.S. military has been pushing for the development of alternative fuels for a while now, and nobody paid much attention until the Pentagon final…

The net effect of restrictions on mountaintop removal on the Central Appalachian economy is uncertain, but a growing body of evidence suggests that the region’s dependence on coal for jobs has not proved a boon. Economic diversification in Central Appalachia would promote a healthier, more stable economy. Research continues to shed more light on the economic and health costs of coal mining.
Synapse Energy…

Well, I've had it. As anyone who has followed my history with the Pickens' Plan knows, I was originally an enthusiastic supporter of NG drilling and weaning us off foreign oil. But the unique (to this country) dangers of fracking to get NG out of the ground compel me to come out
against this aspect of the Pickens' Plan. There is simply too much evidence of damage to watersheds; fantastic volumes of water needed, beyond what watersheds, often in drought areas can provide; and grossly insuf…

With my power plants use of natural gas, it can be placed almost anywhere. Point production at the point of use saves transport costs and saves more money for the systems use. I think that if this system could be used near or at a school, it could also be used as a teaching tool. Teaching about carbon zero po…

Ready or not, here comes the drill! NY State just issued guidelines to natural gas drilling in New York State. These do NOT prohibit drilling near the vulnerable Catskill Watershed - home to 90% of New York City's water, all of it UNFILTERED. Will we wake up one morning to the smell of natural gas in our taps and showers? This is what has happened all over the country, though never on such a catastrophic scale as it would be if New York's watershed were to be contaminated. Remediation would be n…

All is not quiet on the Marcellus Front...
------
After three chemical spills [1] in the past nine days, and following a history of environmental problems over the last year [2], Pennsylvania officials have ordered Cabot Oil and Gas, one of the most active natural gas companies in the state, to stop its hydraulic fracturing operations in Susquehanna County pending an intensive review.
"The department took this action because of our concern about Cabot's current fracking process [3] and to ensur…

As you can see below, there is another army - one concerned with preserving our drinking water, rather than adding irresponsibly to our already over-stocked supply of Natural Gas (Natural Gas is at a multi-year low in price).

In recent years, natural gas producers in the United States have struggled, mostly in vain, to be taken more seriously in the energy world. Big oil companies like Exxon had concluded that natural gas reserves in the United States were not sufficiently abundant to warrant big investments in exploration and drilling. When small independent gas producers argued otherwise, they were often ridiculed.
"I once had to tell the Exxon people in front of a congressional committee that I respectfully disag…

From Propublica:
"Pennsylvania environment officials are racing to clean up as much as 8,000 gallons of dangerous drilling fluids after a series of spills at a natural gas production site near the town of Dimock late last week...The incident is the latest in a series of environmental problems [1] connected to Cabot’s drilling in the Dimock area. Last winter drinking water in several area homes [2] was found to contain metals and methane gas that state officials determined leaked underground from…

I see renewable energy as a long term investment for our economic and national security. Anybody who installed solar panels on their houses 15 years ago are now enjoying free electricity.
I am personally concerned about nationalizing healthcare and exploding deficits and believe these will be the achilles heel of the new administration in the elections of 2010. Unfortunately, the country would have benefited from their desire to promote natural gas and renewable energy ---- away from oil, coal…

ANG fuel tanks contain activated carbon “sponges” that adsorb 160 times their own volume of natural gas. They can be made from Corn cobs , which have a network of nanoscale passageways that remain after carbonization. One gram of this material has as much adsorbing surface area as a football field. When natural gas is adsorbed on a carbon surface it ceases to act like a gas. Dense storage at low pressure makes it possible to hide the much smaller tank inside the car's frame.Pump prices could be…

Anyone who cares as much for our environment as for getting off foreign oil, needs to support the FRAC Act. See below. This may not be enough - we still need an EPA with teeth to investigate and even shut down NG drilling if they are polluting ground water, and charge the offenders with cleaning it up and with meaningful fines.

"Federal environment officials investigating drinking water contamination [1] near the ranching town of Pavillion, Wyo., have found that at least three water wells contain a chemical used in the natural gas drilling process of hydraulic fracturing. Scientists also found traces of other contaminants, including oil, gas or metals, in 11 of 39 wells tested there since March.
The study, which is being conducted under the Environmental Protection Agency’s Superfund program, is the first time the EPA…

The nation’s supply chain is getting an energy-efficient shot in the arm that will make transporting goods more cost-effective, energy efficient and environmentally friendly. A series of cost-sharing grants from the Department of Energy, totaling $300 million, should help 25 separate projects add more than 9,000 alternative fuel and energy efficient vehicles.
The grants also w…
