david@PickensPlan William Kamkwamba and his Windmill

I came across this video today and thought it was just an amazing story. An impoverished 20 year old boy living in Malawi, taught himself how to make a windmill. Recognizing that wind was in abundance where he lived, William was able to construct windmills using materials available and brought running water and electricity to his village for the first time. This is a truly remarkable and inspirational story. What are your thoughts? Continue

Dr. Paul A. Curto Sellout On The Great Lakes

Last week, some very disturbing events took place regarding 52 very large freighters (1000 foot-long class with 40,000 to 70,000 ton cargo holds) based in and on the Great Lakes. These ships, which carry millions of tons of heavy cargoes across the Lakes through the locks of St. Lawrence Seaway to the world, burn the dirtiest dregs of refinery scum in the world -- bunker C oil. This stuff is so sludgy it has to be heated to flow into the old diesels that burn it. 13 of the 52 "Lakers" as they ar… Continue

Jose Serrano Algae Biofuel

What can replace fossil fuels in our motors? Algae Biofuel. I'm going to explain how this proven and renewable energy source, which we can grow in our own country, can solve some of the problems we face with energy, pollution, environment, health and economy. What's keeping us from growing our own fuels? Currently, we don't have the farms constructed to grow the algae and, fossil fuels have been cheap enough to keep us from converting. Now that petroleum fuel has lost some of its affordability,… Continue

Mark Feagins The Future of Alternative and Renewable Energy after 2010

I see renewable energy as a long term investment for our economic and national security. Anybody who installed solar panels on their houses 15 years ago are now enjoying free electricity. I am personally concerned about nationalizing healthcare and exploding deficits and believe these will be the achilles heel of the new administration in the elections of 2010. Unfortunately, the country would have benefited from their desire to promote natural gas and renewable energy ---- away from oil, coal… Continue

David Anderson Visit to Invenergy, LLC Wind Farm in Marseilles, IL

I visited a wind farm in Marseilles, IL on 7/14/09 and enjoyed it so much I thought I'd write a blog post about it. Marseilles is a small town in Illinois located about 75 miles southwest of Chicago. The sign at the edge of town said the population is 4,800. Small towns in rural America have been decimated by the exodus of manufacturing jobs over the last 20 years and the renewable energy industry is a prime opportunity to create new jobs in these areas. The EPW hearing on 7/7/09 included witnes… Continue

Mike Johnston Why The Future of Transportation Fuel Is Hydrogen

A recent television ad from Exxon/Mobil introduces the concept of an on-board fuel reformer for vehicles (view the ad here). These devices combine water and oil (or another feedstock) at elevated temperature in the presence of a catalyst to produce Hydrogen fuel for the vehicle. This sounds very complicated but it really isn’t that hard to understand. I have

David Nelmes Helping the Average Guy Make a Green Impact

In early 2008, I started performing major research on the feasibility of residential scale wind turbine power and solar energy in Pennsylvania. The results were rather disappointing since the sun index is rather low here, and although there were some good areas for wind, the overall cost to install such a system to meet all or most of a homes energy needs exceeded $120,000 and would take 15 to 20 years to get paid back. Granted, you would get paid back, but this did not leave me with an easy pr… Continue

Mike Johnston Keeping The Torch Lit For Alternative Energy

Wasn't it only last year that Americans were outraged over 4$ a gallon gasoline and ready to revolt en masse in support of any kind of alternative energy or fuel which would bring back energy prices that were at least affordable if not cheap or green? Everyone wanted a voice in the choices that were being made regarding our energy future and grassroots campaigns led by T. Boone Pickens and Al Gore each had several million active members working together for a green energy economy. Once gas pric… Continue
