System Efficiency
Energy conversion efficiency - is an expression of the amount of energy produced in proportion to the amount of energy measured as incident solar radiation. Conventional photovoltaic (PV) systems generating either electricity or hot water are able to achieve 12% to 40% efficiency respectively

Aerovironment eat your heart out....
Yesterday (11/19/09), the Solar Impulse HB-SIA taxied down the runway powered by its own engines.
At the controls of the HB-SIA, Solar Impulse test pilot Markus Scherdel cautiously took to the runway under the watchful eyes of the whole team, with computers monitoring the plane’s behaviour online via the embedded telemetric devices.
This inaugural day out on the runway allowed low-speed runway testing with the prototype going through a series of acc… Continue

Harvesting solar power from space through orbiting solar farms sounds extremely interesting. Mitsubishi Electric Corp., a manufacturer of solar panels, has decided to join an AUD $25 billion Japanese project to construct a massive solar farm in space within three decades.
Japan has already started working towards achieving its goal by developing a technology for 1-gigawatt solar farm, which would include four square kilometers of solar panels that will be stationed 36,000 kilometers above the e… Continue

The current technology might have enabled us to install a solar plant right on our rooftops, but all that energy is of no use if there isn’t enough storage medium available. Currently most PV plants use batteries as a storage medium, which not only is an expensive way but the low-energy density of batteries makes them impractical for normal use.
Eco Factor: Storing solar energy in the form of hydrogen for fuel cells.

Global demand for solar cells and panels is likely to drop 17 percent in 2009, says Navigant Consulting. Market recovery won’t come quickly.
SAN FRANCISCO -- Worldwide demand for solar energy equipment is set to drop about 17 percent in 2009, the first time the market has ever experienced a drop in demand, an analyst said Thursday.
Solar cell and panel makers are likely to sell about 4.6 gigawatts this year, compared with about 5.5… Continue

Three universities of the USA have conducted studies related to renewable sources of energy and it has produced some interesting facts. The first and most important one is that renewable energy policies will lead to employment opportunities. Secondly, it will increase the consumer’s income and thirdly, it will have positive effect on the US economy too. The study Clean Energy & Climate Policy for U.S. Growth and Job Creation: An Economic Ass… Continue

Solar Energy Device Researchers and scientists are putting on endless effort to make the sources of energy clean and green. There are many devices in the market that run on solar energy. The alternative energy atmosphere is charged with anticipation and excitement. But till now one of the biggest dampeners in green energy scenario is the prices. Fossil fuels are available cheaply all over the world. But solar, wind, geothermal or biofuels are… Continue
One of our discussions here, "How much time to prepare before economic collapse?" led to this string of posts that I would like to consolidate into a single blog on the issues raised. These were posted just before the 2008 election.
I was asked to come and give some perspective on the art of the possible and make some suggestions on how to proceed in a time of cholera.
Back in 1981, just after Reagan took office, there was a time when the prime interest rate had just peaked at 24%, oil… Continue
I came across this video today and thought it was just an amazing story. An impoverished 20 year old boy living in Malawi, taught himself how to make a windmill. Recognizing that wind was in abundance where he lived, William was able to construct windmills using materials available and brought running water and electricity to his village for the first time.
This is a truly remarkable and inspirational story. What are your thoughts? Continue

When I look at the problems we face today, none can be more vexing that picking the right gifts for the holidays. There is no one more dear to me that the person who has stood by me through thick and thin, in sickness and health, through the good times and the bad, than my mate. Hypothetically, let’s suppose that I am given the choice of spending on her all my allotment of available funds on only one gift or a hundred. It doesn’t matter how much that amount might be, but let’s say for argument t… Continue
