Kenai regulates turbines
By Andrew Waite | Peninsula Clarion
Kenai is doing more than any other city in the state in terms of encouraging wind turbine development within city limits, a leader in Alaska wind energy installation said.
On Nov. 4, the Kenai City Council passed an ordinance establishing the rules for building generators in the city. Nadia Daggett, Alaska Wind Industries' owner called it the most progressive set of urban wind turbine regulations she's seen in Alaska.… Continue

Despite the favorable wind resource conditions the biggest hurdle faced by the wind industry in trying to increase the amount of wind development is the current state of transmission rules that create economic penalties for intermittent (interruptible) resources such as wind.
By firming the resource and providing capacity value, Compressed Air Energy Storage (“CAES”) may be able to mitigate many transmission related costs that are currently seen as onerous for wind development. The biggest inst… Continue

Three universities of the USA have conducted studies related to renewable sources of energy and it has produced some interesting facts. The first and most important one is that renewable energy policies will lead to employment opportunities. Secondly, it will increase the consumer’s income and thirdly, it will have positive effect on the US economy too. The study Clean Energy & Climate Policy for U.S. Growth and Job Creation: An Economic Ass… Continue

Solar Energy Device Researchers and scientists are putting on endless effort to make the sources of energy clean and green. There are many devices in the market that run on solar energy. The alternative energy atmosphere is charged with anticipation and excitement. But till now one of the biggest dampeners in green energy scenario is the prices. Fossil fuels are available cheaply all over the world. But solar, wind, geothermal or biofuels are… Continue
A recent news report mentioned that Chinese manufacturers were heeding the call to make low-cost wind turbines for worldwide distribution. With soaring energy demand in China alone, they have good reason to do so. Naturally, there are other burgeoning nations with high energy demands that stand to benefit from low cost energy products, as well. The list of these nations includes India and Brazil, so between the three of them there is sure to be enough business to last half a millennium.

One of our discussions here, "How much time to prepare before economic collapse?" led to this string of posts that I would like to consolidate into a single blog on the issues raised. These were posted just before the 2008 election.
I was asked to come and give some perspective on the art of the possible and make some suggestions on how to proceed in a time of cholera.
Back in 1981, just after Reagan took office, there was a time when the prime interest rate had just peaked at 24%, oil… Continue
I came across this video today and thought it was just an amazing story. An impoverished 20 year old boy living in Malawi, taught himself how to make a windmill. Recognizing that wind was in abundance where he lived, William was able to construct windmills using materials available and brought running water and electricity to his village for the first time.
This is a truly remarkable and inspirational story. What are your thoughts? Continue

When I look at the problems we face today, none can be more vexing that picking the right gifts for the holidays. There is no one more dear to me that the person who has stood by me through thick and thin, in sickness and health, through the good times and the bad, than my mate. Hypothetically, let’s suppose that I am given the choice of spending on her all my allotment of available funds on only one gift or a hundred. It doesn’t matter how much that amount might be, but let’s say for argument t… Continue

Last week, some very disturbing events took place regarding 52 very large freighters (1000 foot-long class with 40,000 to 70,000 ton cargo holds) based in and on the Great Lakes. These ships, which carry millions of tons of heavy cargoes across the Lakes through the locks of St. Lawrence Seaway to the world, burn the dirtiest dregs of refinery scum in the world -- bunker C oil. This stuff is so sludgy it has to be heated to flow into the old diesels that burn it. 13 of the 52 "Lakers" as they ar… Continue

Alternative Energy Sources The international image of America is a country that is constantly creating roadblocks in the way of reaching a global agreement on climate change and environmental protection. Americans are seen as totally oblivious to the issues of global warming, and energy and food crisis. Recent research shows a totally different outlook. When asked if it’s important for the U.S. to develop and use solar energy, 92% of Americans respon… Continue

Solar energy was the first energy source used by mankind.
Of course, the use was limited to drying things and heating caused by direct contact, but it was a use. In modern times, solar energy has been a power source since the early 1950s, but was not widespread… Continue

If the Pickens plan (which I support) supported a National Energy Lottery (see blog below) proposal and the 4 million followers donated 5 bucks a week for this Energy Raffle, there would be 800 winners a week or 41,600 winners a year
of a $25,000 voucher good only for Renewable products, ie; solar, wind, hybrid, energy green appliances, etc...and be fully transferrable as well. Take advantage of the Fed's energy credit and it would buy around $32,000 worth of Green product/s.
If the Pickens Pla… Continue
