This could be the best time.
Unfortunately, many people have recently lost their jobs, and many more people are about to lose their jobs. My view is that as long as you work for someone else you are never secure. Today you are nothing but a number in the corporate book keeping system. You are seen either as an asset, or a liability, nothing more. There is no future in that. So if you are already out of work anyway, I see it as an opportunity to finally have the time to start a business. So you s…

It's no secret that one of my divisions is building micro homes. We get a lot of mail from people that are very interested in these smaller homes, and one of their big complaints is that their city, or town has what are referred to as minimum home square footage standards, or other words to that effect. Now I can understand that no one wants a bunch of shacks, and yards littered with junk cars etc. in their neighborhood, and I totally agree with that. But those same zoning laws are designed to p…

Solar
Some Solar Confusion by Walt Barrett
I received an email this morning from a friend of mine. Some people are confusing the cost of solar electric systems with the cost of solar hat water heating systems. This is the letter below and my response.
My Blog Said.
“I can understand the reluctance of people to invest in high end solar electric systems priced at $30,000.00 to $60,000.00, especially, in these difficult economic times. However, I am really troubled by the almost total lack of inte…

Micro Homes
Some Thoughts About Micro Homes And Micro Apartments by Walt Barrett
The question of land, its availability, and the cost keeps nagging at my brain. There is no point in designing, and selling a mass produced home for the price of a compact car if there is no legal place to put it. There’s no point either in putting one on a trailer frame as far as I am concerned. If I wanted to live in a trailer, I would simply buy a used one very cheaply. I see them on Craig’s List for as low as $…

We have just founded Hurras Solar America and we are offering exclusive dealerships in the USA, Mexico, Central and South America and the entire Caribbean. This equipment will never be sold customer direct in any area where we have a distributor. This is a great business opportunity, and a chance to lock into your own exclusive area. Complete system prices start as low as $225.00 plus shipping from factory to dealers for non freezing climates.
We are not gouging like some are. Get in on the lead…

I have announced today that we will begin converting steel shipping containers into micro homes at our tractor assembly shop in Connecticut. We will offer optional solar energy systems to power these units. The size is either 8' x 20' or 8' x 40' all insulated steel construction. Interested parties should contact Walt Barrett at: wbarrett1@aol.com .

It has been pointed out to me by Luane, one of my friends on the Pickens Plan, that should the Pickens plan for some reason cease operations in the future it might be a good idea to save the contact information of anyone that you wish to stay in touch with. I think it's a great idea. Mine is easy as you can Google "Walt Barrett", and find me that way. or you can write me at wbarrett1@aol.com or ceo@chinadepot.com . Another suggestion is to put your info on Facebook and send it to the various gro…

Good Morning!
I have decided that as soon as this rainy weather breaks I will start to film the DIY solar hot water collector construction video in segments, in my so-called "spare time." As promised, it will be totally free.
I will film the entire process, and then filter it down to show each step and how it is accomplished.
When the first segment is posted I will ask you to please tell your friends as this is a lot of work and I want the most people to get the benefit of it. It will be on my P…

Being a businessperson, I get a lot of mail, and comments from people that are really hurting so I decided to reprint a letter I have written to one very nice gentleman and typical American that has recently commented to me about what a rough time he is having, and it's just not fair. He has done all the right things in life and is a good American and now he is reaping the black moldy harvest brought on by the mismanaging, meddling fools in government. Please do not forget who has been at the he…

The Micro Home Lighting System by Walt Barrett
Sorry for the long delay but we have been very busy shipping out generators. It's that time of the year. Now we are sold out so we can get back to the micro home project by the weekend.
We have received the shipment of LED light bulbs from the factory and they are excellent. I have one in my desk lamp and it is super and easy on my eyes too. I like the fact that it only draws 3 watts and the life span is tested to 50,000 hours. Each bulb should save…

We are just a few days away from installing the roofing and siding for the micro home. Between heavy rain, and a heavy shipping schedule John and me have had very little time to work on the micro home for days.

More coming soon.

Late this afternoon I posted a nine minute video that I shot in Princeton Massachusetts last Tuesday with the assistance of my wife Nancy. And on top of that, we had a great picnic lunch! Who's better than us! I put this video together as a reminder of what we stand to lose if we don't get a handle on the energy and CO2 problems. Personally, I have been telling people for years that if we don't pay attention to the problem then old mother nature will and she won't be so gentle. She might even fl…

I have been building solar hot water heaters for many years and also produce a lot of video commercials in house for my Internet business. We no longer build solar systems, but are interested in spreading the DIY technology so that it is more affordable to all. Long story short, the video will be free but we will not take the time or the money unless we get 1000 requests minimum. It will be totally free, but we want to see the interest first as we are getting very few comments on any of our ener…

I'm taking a little break from the simple solar Blogs this morning to ask everyone a favor. Please read the survey below and comment. Be as critical as you like. We need the inputs.
Thanks,
Walt
This survey is a very important part in the process to determine what direction we should travel in to find a viable solution to the housing problem world-wide. We realize that Micro Homes will not be the solution to the entire problem, but what about the person who may never be able to afford a home in…

Last time we talked about year round non-freezing climate solar hot water heating. Those systems are really simple. Today I will write about freezing climate antifreeze loop systems. These are slightly more complicated, but you don’t have to be young Thomas Edison to understand them.
The antifreeze loop system has to have either flat plate glazed (glass covered) or vacuum tube solar collectors on the roof or ground mounted. Two layers of low iron glass on a solar collector will really raise the…

Simple Solar Storage
We have talked about building simple solar hot water collectors and now it’s time to talk about the hot water storage. We also have to talk about your particular climate conditions. In solar, there are only two kinds of climate conditions, freezing and non freezing climates. All further engineering is predicated on one of these two conditions.
Let’s deal with the simple one first, and that would be a truly non-freezing climate. In a non-freezing climate it’s as simple or as…

Simple Solar Energy - Part One by Walt Barrett
I received a comment today on my Pickens Plan Page that gave me an idea for this particular Blog. The person said that he was interested in solar energy, but knew very little about it. I’m very glad he asked, even if he is the only one that reads this Blog! I used to teach adult evening solar courses back in the seventies in the local colleges, and I know where he is coming from. I learned that many of the courses and books were in Tecnobabble. Tha…

LED Lighting For The Micro Home Project by Walt Barrett
Light emitting diode technology has come a very long way in recent years. These units give off incredible amounts of light using only milliwatts and up to 4 watts in the home lighting range. They barely trickle electricity from your battery storage bank. They come in 12 volt DC and 120 volt A/C configurations. You don't even need an inverter to run the 12 volt DC type. This makes them ideal for off the grid living.
We have finally found a s…

For your convenience we have posted a Picasa web album of the photo history of our micro home project. It will be added to as the project progresses. This is a 100% off the grid expandable home and it will serve as the test bed for our many energy saving projects. Here is the link.
