VPO is currently at work marshalling the support, expertise and resources necessary to create a demonstration sustainable neighborhood (DSN) for the post-peak-oil period – what VPO member Jon Cooksey semi-whimsically calls a Kunstler Village, after James Kunstler, the peak oil writer. Entirely off the grid, graywater system recycling all wastewater and sewage, everyone growing their own food to extent possible, possibly doing co-op transportation, etc. The works.
Clearly, as a demonstration proj…

Every time there is an exchange of goods and services, outside of the trades defined as 'barter', there is an equal and opposite exchange of money. The 'free market' of goods and services can not exist alone without the 'free market' of money, and money is not free. It is a commodity that is essential to the functioning of any economy and it is an oligopoly (like oil) that is manufactured, controlled and priced by cartels of bankers. What bankers do would be called price fixing in any other indu…

Send your idea to Michael of the 'Inventions R US Group and within 90 days you will get a reply from the BG Consulting Group.
I received my answer from Bernard Garnier of BG Consulting announcing that as of 1 Jan 2009 BG will be concentrating their efforts on "US project by US company or US citizens".
Then the next thing you have to do is publish on the internet.
I punched the ends out pop cans and using a 2x3 steel stud to align them glued them together with silicone to form tubes about 7 ft…

Fundamental knowledge to run a sustainable economy
In every negotiation or trade transaction there are 3 elements - Value – Wealth – Power.
These 3 elements (domains) masquerade as one another in much the same way as a word may be either – subject – object – verb in a sentence. Generally speaking Value is the subject of a transaction, Wealth is the object, and Power is the verb (force) that drives the bargain.
To identify the different elements in a transaction one must ask – who gets what? -…

The world has 32 billion acres of bio-productive land and over 6 billion people so we only have 5.3 acres per person which we share (or perhaps should share) with all the other subspecies. The problem is that North Americans use 24 acres per person, Chinese 4 and Indians 1.9 acres per person. On a global level each human uses 6.9 acres which is obviously not sustainable.
The solution to problems of environmental degradation and resource depletion will not be solved by one person with one idea. W…

It is easier to promote something other than yourself. Everyone is more important than everyone else.
So how can a bunch of concerned but unimportant people get the country off oil?
Every individual on the Pickens Plan can adopt a city and create a Ning for free. Each of these Nings becomes the web page for a Club or Association. Each features a city name, the word 'sustainable' and whatever is the creator's particular bent.
Then we link them all together.
Each sustainable community organiza…

In the world before internet there were universities where people would congregate to share knowledge. Graduates moved into jobs, Governments or started their own universities or organizations to capture their own piece of the pie, forever thankful to the individuals and systems responsible for their status and well being.
Now we see the new world order evolving. It is a virtual world anchored to real people who perform real functions in a rapidly changing environment.
The virtual internet soc…

felt that James Tracy may only have another 6 months to live. I felt his panic and became welmed with a sense of urgency. There are some things that I may never get over. I need a golf fix. I am suffering withdrawal already and the winter is only beginning.
May I leave you with a management philosophy that has served me well for over 35 years -?
Fundamentals of Sustainable Management
1.Never tell responsible subordinates what they are supposed to do. Let them figure it out for themselves. A p…

While a business is being developed there is no way to value it, so forcing an entrepreneur to give up any part of the business for any amount of money is not fair to members on the management team. The investor and the Government have to be part of the business team, and they should not be treated any differently than the troops in the trenches.
In order to get the right people running the businesses and give democracy an edge over capitalism we need legislation that restricts distribution of…

The Ottawa Sustainable Community Association hopes to initiate a template project that could be fundamentally replicated by any community and superimposed on existing infrastructure. The intent of this management structure is to promote sustainability, control runaway capitalism, limit corporate dominance of a community and streamline municipal management. Benefits from this business will be paid out predominately as benefits to the community.
Our project will be incorporated under the Ontario…

Unfortunately the attainment of environmental sustainability alone does not motivate humans because we have developed a socio-economic structure driven by profit. Success and growth for any individual, business or country is determined by incremental gains of money or material wealth won from other competitors. We enjoy these benefits and fight to maintain a level of consumption we have grown to accept as our personal right. No one is willing to give up a personal benefit to solve any problem an…

In ancient times armies took cities by siege, not with hooks and ladders but by depriving the inhabitants of the necessities of life. Within recent history the Germans tried to take Moscow and the Russians – Berlin by using the same tactics. Urban centers (cities) by themselves are “not sustainable”. All cities import food, water, energy, raw material and/or retail products. The total area of land, sea and air required to provide this external source of supply is the city's “ecological footprint…
