Yes, water is not a good source of energy for fuel. Powering your car with water is a SCAM !

Water, as H2O, is a very stable molecule which is why it is one of the few molecules this small that is not a gas at room temperature. It takes a lot of energy to break the bonds. Electrolysis is one way that separates water into H2 and O2 gas. These two gases react explosively to form water again. This explosion does release a lot of energy, but the laws of thermodynamics guarantee that this conversion of water to gas and back to water cannot be 100% efficient so the process takes more energy to create the H2 and O2 gas than can be recovered to power the car.

The concept of Brown's gas or HHO is true. Brown's gas is just a mixture of hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2) in just the right ratio so when it reacts, it forms only water. So this concept is true. The problem is it takes more energy to separate the water into H2 and O2 to form the gas then you get back. Since it is impractical to store H2 on a car (it either has to be under extreme pressure or very cold, both take lots of energy), then there has to be a large source of electricity onboard to convert the stored water into the H2 and O2 gas fast enough to power the car.

The bottom line is if this "water" fuel really worked, clearly it would be used in every car in Europe where the price of gasoline is $10-12 per gallon !

As most of us have been taught, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

Now, I've also been told "nothing ventured, nothing gained". So, if you want to take the risk, that is up to you.

I still do not know if this really works or not but I have looked a website of a large vehicle accessory company who have been in business for 15 years now sell kits. They claim it is not a joke and that it really works. This Company is not a fly by night operation and they stake thier reputation on it. I probably will not buy one but it would be interesting to hear what they say. The web site is www.mimousa.com

Actually the first law of thermodynamics concerns the conservation of energy. Matter on the other hand can be destroyed as is represented by Einstein's equation E=MC2. In a system like a car engine, mass is conserved. However, mass is destroyed in nuclear reactions, but energy is conserved when mass is interpreted as storing energy.

Nonetheless, I agree with your view, Jeff. Thanks for the comment.

More details: 2nd law of thermodynamics: In a closed system energy & matter can neither be created or destroyed. However a car is not a closed system, you have "losses" due to heat and friction.
The sites claim that the energy to break down the water is "free" since your engine is already running and powering the alternator. Not true, as you increase the load on the alternator, you increase the amount of power needed to run it. Secondly, your engine is not tuned to be running on HHO. Power loss. Thirdly, the HHO is being introduced to the engine through the air intake, reducing the amount of air (and O2) to burn the gasoline. If this really worked, you would not need gasoline at all. The battery would start to break down the water, then the engine would be started on HHO, and run on it exclusively. Won't happen. The reason many people seem to get more mileage when they install bogus devices like this are:
#1. They don't want to admit they have been duped.
#2. They are much more careful driving and would be saving fuel anyway.
#3. In adding the device, they also did other things to their vehicle: checked the pressure in the tires, changed the air filter, tuned the engine, etc.
#4. They didn't have accurate figures on their mileage previously.
